Singer 5050 Mechanical Sewing Machine Logo

NOT A 5050! I've got a SINGER 328 but the site only wants to talk about other models! I just bought a Singer 328 in beautiful shape. It sews OK, but it appears that the drive belt is a bit loose - I have to give it a spin manually to get it started when I have the foot controller button floored. I've taken off the plate just below the handwheel and can see a couple of likely candidates for adjustment, but both are VERY hard to get to.

Thanks, Robbie! Unfortunately, I have the manual and it does not mention belt tightening or replacement. I've found listings for service manuals online, but I was trying to avoid shelling out another $15 when I'm not sure the service/repair manual will help.
I've just ordered some cams for decorative stitching from Ebay and they come with a very funky looking screwdriver which looks like it might help. Got my fingers crossed!
    Peace,
    Marina

Hi. In my experience, this is a fairly common problem (at least with my Singers). The drive belt needs to be a bit loose, but it is possible that yours is a bit TOO loose. Check your manual for how to change the belt. It should also tell you how to tighten the belt.

If you don't have a manual, I strongly suggest you invest in one. They are the most important accessory you can own! I found your manual at http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html

Hope this helps!!

Marina, Re-reading your original post, I'm thinking that the problem could be in your foot controller. Do you have the kind with the button/knob on top that you push? If so, I've got some great information on adjusting the controller. Please let me know.

I'm surprised the manual doesn't talk about replacing the belt.

    Robbie

You can download a free pdf file from the Singer Website, link is
http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals, type in the search field your model number "5050" and click "search", wait for the screen to build, it will take a few seconds but you should see a "free download" link to click, again wait for the pdf file to open up, then save it to your PC, print it out and bind it in covers if you can.
Hope this helps you out. Most Singer and White manuals are available on the Singer website.

What is the part that holds on the spool of thread called on a Singer 5050?

Do you have a manual?
I checked the online manual available on the Singer site for your model and the part you mention is called a Horizontal spool pin and holder.
If you would like a copy of the manual go to the Singer site:
http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html
Type in 5050 and click on Search.
On the next page click on Free download!
Hope this helps!

How to replace belt on singer model 328

I don't know if it will help you but you can go to singerco.com and download a copy of your manual for free. You may have to take it in to a repair place to do it, if the manual doesn't help. Good luck, I am sure that it is a fine machine and may be worth getting it tuned up to give you many years of service.

I bought a 5050 model on ebay and the handwheel is

Unless you want to deal with the little screws to take it apart, you may take it to an authorized singer service dealer. Look in your local yellow pages under sewing machines.
