The most common causes of evaporator freezing are:
dirty or obstruccted evaporator coil,
evaporator fan not working or working too slow.
and the most frecuent is LOW on R-22 Refrigerant. Check lines, look for wet looking spots and greasy/oily stuff on the lines.

as an appliance tech of 28 yrs, this answer is bs, low refrigerant causes coils not to frost, this isn't an AC unit!!,evaporator fan running too slow is usually caused by bad fan motor, or bad control board, the frosting too heavy is caused by the lack of air flow, most the frost buildup in this case is around the coil and not as heavy thru the center.
