I doubt you can do anything about it. Code 10 is a hardware failure, so you will have to return it and get your warrenty.

I have a SimpleTech 320 GB external hard drive. It suddenly stopped appearing in My Computer. When I turn it on, it makes a repetitive sound that seems like a warning of some kind...what is it? It sounds...

Hello and welcome to the TSF. If the external drive has provisions for external power you'll need to plug that in, usb ports cannot power a 320 drive. If the drive has 2 usb plugs (one for additional power) you'll need them both plugged in, and I would suggest that the laptop should also be running off of external power rather than battery. If you disconnect the usb drive or any other usb device without first stopping the device then sometimes the usb ports will fail to recognize the device when it is plugged back in, a simple reboot should do the trick. You can also check in the device manager for any yellow exclamation marks on your usb host conrtoller and see if the driver for it is in need of an update.
Any drivers you need should be on simpletech's website, though normally you should not need any for a usb hdd. If the power cord/a/c adaptor is faulty or the hdd is loose in the enclosure(thus not making good contact) then you should pester simpletech to either replace the cord, a/c adaptor,or unit, and see if there are instructions on how to take apart the enclosure and reseat the drive/connections.

Simpletech External Drive now failing to connect with USB 2.0

Hello sir, let me give you some tips, you can dismantle it and get the HDD unit, buy a cheap external SATA usb hdd enclosure with USB 2.0 . Well all of them are 2.0 compatible (the unit without the HDD) and put it there. you can always keep the old one for posterity. hope this helps.

Simpletech 320gb hard drive

the hard drive inside of the external device is damaged. probably the drive head scratched one or more of the platters inside of the drive. this is a common occurance with laptops and computers when they take a dive off of a desk.

need to either get a replacement drive or another external hard drive.

Simpletech 320 gb

It has to do with the way computers count. Computers count in binary where we count in decimal.
Hard drive makers list there drives capacities in the decimal format, where windows lists it in it's binary format.
Wikipedia has a good explanation.

Also, the drive may have some preinstalled software on it that could be taking up a bit of space (it's usually not much).

Need driver

Hello maris12345

You shouldn't need drivers for your USB mass storage device on Windows XP. It should be "plug-n-play".

Is yours an older computer? If the computer's USB interface (hardware) is not at least USB ver 1.1 then that may be the problem. (I assume your external hard drive isn't being detected, yes?)

Can you run other USB devices on the same port(s) OK?
