Maybe late, but if in case you continue to have this issue, try this out. reset its counter, by pressing and holding the CANCEL button until all lights flash in sequence, after that, you may need to turn off and turn on the printer and test it again..

Any time an imaging drum is replaced on a 1700, 1710, or 1720 model dell laser printer, you must reset
the photoconductor count. The following procedure illustrates how this is done:
1. Open the front access cover
2. Press and HOLD the Cancel Button (Red X)
3. When you see the LED's 'Chase' turn the printer off
4. Close the access cover, and turn the printer back on
5. Press the Continue Button (Green Triangle) to print a settings report
6. Under the section 'Cartridge Information', locate the item 'PHOTOCONDUCTOR COUNT=0K' indicating 'Zero Thousands'.
s now been reset, and you should now be able to print now ok

Problem with Dell 1720 printer

Hello

You have to check couple things in this case.

Ensure that the printer cover is closed.
  1. Remove the toner cartridge.
  2. Firmly shake it side-to-side and front-to-back several times to redistribute the toner.
  3. Reinsert the toner cartridge, and continue printing.
Repeat this procedure multiple times until the print remains faded. When the print remains faded, replace the toner cartridge.

or
The imaging drum is approaching full and needs to be replaced. Order a new imaging drum.

Dell 1720 flashinf replace drum- error.

I believe this message is occur because the laser printer drum needs to be replaced, not the toner cartridge.

These are two different things. The part is a DELL 310-8710 Drum Unit. Just google DELL 1720N drum and you should be able to find one.

Replaced drum on Dell 1720dn printer. Where is

This should fix the drum light being on that 1720

Turn off the power using the switch on the back of the printer. Open the front door of the printer. Hold Continue button down, power on the printer, and continue to holding Continue down until the LEDs begin to flash. When the LEDs start to flash, release Continue button. The LEDs will continue flashing until only Error LED will be lit. Close the front door. Continue, Ready/Data, Toner Low and Load Paper LEDs should be lit. Wait till the printer completes the POST process. POST is complete when fan noise and rollers stops. After POST wait for 5 seconds Press Cancel button 4 times slowly until the Toner Low LED is lit. This is the procedure resetting the counter. Press and hold Continue until all LEDs begin to cycle in sequence, then release Continue. Now only the Toner Low LED will be lit. Cycle the power of the printer: Remove the power cable - Wait for 5 seconds - Plug the power cable back to the printer - Power the Printer on.

The second link was the helpful information. Also, to cut through all of that --

If you need to reset the counter:

1. Remove drum kit with toner

2. Make sure all print jobs are flushed otherwise whatever has been sent and not printed will come spewing out.

3. Hold down CANCEL Button until all lights flash through.

4. Slide the drum kit and toner properly into the Printer.

done.

Dell 1720dn has gray streaks in printing

That green drum is the imaging drum, and it needs to be replaced. You can purchase directly from dell:

After-market replacements are available as well from a number of online sellers. A search on Google will provide many links.
