I've had good luck with that same 2wire router, but Att is right, the ethernet & internet lights should stay on. Have you tried moving the ethernet connector to a different port on the router? If they're going out, some component inside is failing, but it could be specific to that one port, and you may be able to use another without a problem. (Just a thought.)

Try ipconfig to check if and modem is detected then further troubleshooting can be done by connecting the modem with hardwire
