If cannot boot into the system, a factory restore may be needed. This will restore your computer to an "out of the box" setting and erase all your data.

if you cannot even get into safe mode, recovering any data you might want can be difficult. Booting your system with a LIVE cd like HIren's boot cd, or a LINUX cd may work and allow you to backup your files, but I cannot guarantee this.

(since you mention this is a used laptop, it will be hard to tell if the restore partition is still on the hard drive)

After you have tried the backup options outlined above, restart your computer. Hold down the Ctrl and tap on F11. If the System recovery partition is still intact, your computer should start reloading windows again.

Be sure to do your windows updates and have a valid antivirus ready too!

Dimension 5100 and windows xp pro SP3 clean install

Well if you have it installed on the computer and cant get past the Windows logo. Put the SP3 disk in and do a repair. Make sure you hit -R and not the repair button after clicking continue. Well the directions for a repair will be on the screen. That is my thoughts on what you should do. If you have already done this, then I'm not sure where you should head to next. Hope this helps!!

Problems when installing sp2 on my dell 4400

Reboot and keep tapping on F8 into Safe Mode. You can select "Last known good configuration" or continue In safe mode and do a system restore to the day before you installed the SP3. To do a system restore, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System restore. Windows XP SP3 has some issues with certain programs giving the blue screen of death.
