Simply wanted to mention that this "shaking hand" icon also appears on my camera, brand new, not in movie or recording mode, and does not respond user-manual recommended ISO settings that should reduce/ eliminate stabilization problems, and therefore, presumably, the warning icon. Defect, perhaps? Also, user manual content differs from actual hardware, with no mention of this fact. Sadly, Canon seems unresponsive, so far auto-refusing an email request for tech help, my first attempt on a Saturday. No tech database to speak of either for the G9, so we're on our own apparently. Very disappointing.
While I can't be specific for your camera the "Palm" sign normally indicates that "Anti-shake stabilisation" is operational and although you can normally turn it off it is preferable not to as it improves the quality of your recording especially when using long zoom.

a palm on the right side is a concern?
I had 400 pictures on the camera. The playback was somehow changed to a large and a small frame. A hand kept appearing. The pictures were longer and had white at the top and bottom of the picture. Took out the SD card, reset the camera and lost 300 of the previous picture after card put back in. Is there any way to retrieve the 300 pictures from the camera, since they are not on the sd card?
