SOURCE: Bicycles Brakes Tightening

Are the brakes center pull or side pull?
Center pull would have a nut directly in the center of the brake. Now go to the brake lever on your handle bars and tighten the turn screw where the cable handle is. Keep turning the nut till your brakes grip.
If you have side pull brakes. Then where the cable meets the breaks. Their is a nut that the cable slides through. Loosen the nut and firmly pull the cable till its tight and retighten the nut.

SOURCE: loose handlebars on a Mongoose XR-75 mountain bike

Check the splines on the handle bar. Just loosen the "clamp" and slide the bar over to one side enough so you can tell if the are stripped or not. If they are then replace the bar, if not then reassemble and try to put a littlle extra torque on the bolt.

I have noticed with the 2 of these bikes that I have that the bars do not like to stay tight for long, they tend to work thier way loose about every other time we use them. I just keep tightening them untill the splines strip, then pick up a new bar.

Contact Mongoose for parts info at: www.Mongoose.com under "about" click ask mongoose.

Good luck.

How to tighten the brakes on a giant trance x3

Hi... You will have to on your question, is something loose that needs tightening, or is it a setup issue, or has the blocks or pads worn over time?

If your bike came with disk brakes, you might need to replace the disk pads, or bleed you hydraulics.

With more details, a better answer can be supplied.

Brakes need to be tighten

The wound steel cable that connects your brake lever to the brake pads can be adjusted via a screw or nut at the top of the brake pad assembly. Simply loosen the assembly and gently tug the wire end toward the front of the bike tire to tighten brake grip; tug it backward to loosen. Tighten the screw partially to hold the cable in place, test the brakes with the brake lever, and adjust again if necessary before fully tightening. It may help to put the bike on a stand or hold it so that you can spin the wheel, check that the brakes are adjusted so that the pads do not rub the wheel. You can do the same thing with the rear brakes. You will need a small tool to loosen and tighten the brake pad assembly; your household toolbox should have something :)

While you are adjusting the brake tension you should also check the brake pads for signs of wear. If your bicycle brakes squeal, show uneven wear or are perfectly smooth, go to a shop and get a new set! Regular brake maintenance is very important for bike safety.

My son has a 26"

The disc brakes may seem like a new a completely different technology, but really they adjust basically the same as rim brakes. Both of your problems sound like the cables have too much slack in them. There is a mounting bolt for the cables at the brake, loosen that, pull the cable taught, tighten the bolt and squeeze the levers again. If that is better and the brakes don't drag, there you go.

If it still doesn't fix the brakes, then it is time to consider taking the bike into a bike shop and letting the mechanic have a look.

The brake handle is loose on the handle bar. How do I tighten it?

There should be a bolt with an allen key head on it which is used to tighten the brake handle assembly to the handle bar.

Just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the picture at the website indicated.

The bolt you need to tighten is the uppermost one in the pic.

Just use the correct size allen key wrench to tighten in up once you put it in a position for your hand to comfortably operate the brake.

Good luck.

How do I adjust the brakes

This brake mechanism has a Lock/Adjuster nut which holds the brake arms together but it is also to adjust them too.....Just hold the brake unit with hand and break the nut loose....loose enough that you can move each brake pad arm seperately but not to loose.....Then squeeze the arms inward until the pads almost touch the rim then tighten back up...this action moves the pads closer to the rim to stop better faster.....Hope this helps..........Metalpoet..........

The housing of my brakes on the handle bars is loose and keeps moving. how do i tighten it so that it stops moving when i apply pressure on it and/or squeeze the brake lever??

If the screw is all the way tight and still slipping ... try to find a fatter part of the handle bar to mount the grip to. You will probably will not find any such that is convenient for you to continue to use the brake ... remove the grip, wrap some electrical tape around the handle bar, reattach the grip. Tighten it and give it a try.

I hope this works for you
