You may have a corrupted external hard drive. Often, corrupted means your files are still there, but the directory on the drive is mesed up, and the files cannot be found. If you are on a Windows PC, right click on the drive in File Explorer. Then choose Properties / Tools / Error Checking / Check. This should find and fix basic problems on the drive. Before that though, just try the external drive connected to another USB port, and if you have one, using another connecting cable, just to rule out problems with these items.

power source jack/plug might be the problem if it has been bumped about or if it was powered up and running before plugging in to the comp.....
i had the problem of my 1tb ext/hdd no longer being recognized because when i plugged it into my comp, the jack was live and not switched of at the wall. the only way i got it to work was to pull it out of the casing and switched it with the 320 ext/hdd i have as they are they same brand..just diff sizes. going to put the 320 into comp to become master drive as the internal is a measly 40g. i think i had burned out the connector pins on the power jack when it was plugged in live. i hope this is an idea for you to try.

If it is a new hard drive then it needs to be formatted. You can do this by going into your start menu - control panel - administrative tools - computer management - disc manager. I could be a little off on the wording as I don't have my computer handy, but in the disc management you should be able to right click on the drive in here and choose format. This will format the drive to be used. I hope this helps.
If these steps do not correct the problem, you will need to re-format your External Hard Drive ***WARNING*** FORMATTING A HARD DRIVE WILL ERASE, YOU WILL LOSE, ALL DATA

I will often boot to linux like Mint-18.2 or Backbox-5 from a USB drive rather than using a windows install/build that may be compromised or infected. This way you know you have a clean boot image to desktop and then try to access the drive in question. 4 times out of 5 the disk or wiring or electronics on the external USB is failing and that fifth time is the time when you have an infected windows environment. If you have access to other computers you can try moving the drive over to check on other machines but then you risk spreading the infection.
Distrowatch is a good place to fish up a good alternate linux desktop then just use an ISO image then use something like YUMI.2.0.x to burn that to a USB and you can boot your own vanilla reliable desktop on any suspect machine to investigate and inspect various hardwares and files. It also allows for extraction of key files before trying to reinstall windows or something else. Be careful of suggestions that have you doing too much in the current desktop because as with "deleted files" corruption issues can also get worse if you continue with the current compromised GUI environment
