Pressing the 'open' button on my NAD C542 CD Player no longer opens the disk drawer. Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated. Regards Michael

    Hi Michael

Do you hear a motor running in the unit when you press the button.

Thanks robotek. There is no sound of a motor running when I press the button (on the unit or on the remote). All that happens is that 'OPEN' is shown on the LCD.

    Regards

    Michael

G'Day Michael,

Having fixed thousands of CD players in my career, and also being a NAD Authorised service guy from 1989 till recent times, I can comment with some authority to your situation, and correct some of the ill found assumptions given to you already.

This unit uses a KSS213c transport. Very common and used in many machines, also relatively reliable.

Pressing the 'open' button on my NAD C542 CD - 2a8af3a.jpg
The drawer load motor is not shown above. Is will be mounted on the black plastic load assembly. The drive belt/motor for it will be under the tray runners.
If you do not hear the motor run, then it WILL NOT be a broken or failing belt. However, this is the most common problem with this style of transport. I would be checking anyway to see, the load motors do free run fairly quiet with no drive belt connected. Wind the tray assembly out by hand by kicking the gears over to open the draw to see the belt/motor

Because you cannot get it to work from the remote, AND you have "open" indicator on the front panel, it WILL NOT be a faulty front panel button(never seen one fail ever!)

I have never replaced a load motor to a Sony transport. Spindle motors can be a problem, but they never stop working altogether.

I would be checking the tray mechanics, a jam caused by something fouling the gears may cause a fail. Tap the front of the draw as you press eject to see if you can encourage it to work.
Sometimes, small nylon drive pinions can split, the excessive gap in the gears caused by the split causing a bind. Check also for blown pico fuses in the servo drive stage. This will cause no drive to the load motor.
If you cannot pin down the source of the problem, the player IS welll worth repair. These machines sound great and would have cost you a few bucks to begin with. If you need help locating an expert NAD authorised repair guy I can help.

Happy to discuss any of this further with you. As previously direct your comment to me by name. Cheers

regards
robotek

Hi. I just wanted to Add that I had exactly the same problem recently - display says open but drawer will not open. The cd player worked fine as long as you wanted to listen to the disc that was stuck inside! After reading the answers here I decided to open it up and see if I could find the problem. I took the cover off and the front panel off and also removed a few screws holding the cd transport mechanism down and manually opened and closed the drawer a couple of times. After part reassembling and powering up again I found the drawer was working again. I can only conclude that the cogs of the mechanism had become jammed somehow. Now it works fine and still sounds good. Worth a shot if you have the same issue. Tom

You might want to try accessing behind the front plate sometimes the button is not making contact with the board. OR

The eject mechanism needs to be replaced. There is only two probable causes here. If the remote eject works its the button if not eject works jecked for a jammed mech. Thanks

If you hear no motor running sounds like you got a motor that went out on you thus not wanting to eject. Thus motor would need ot be replaced as the cause.

Most cases these have little bands that wrap around the ejector motor and the mech gear when these get old they Dry out and become uneffective, I am just wondering if you have the unit open so we can check this fact or not?

NAD C542 does not turn on. How to fix it?

Hi Michael, check inside your NAD C542, there are 4 fuses, check that none is open, if all are well, you could have problems with the capacitors in the area of the power supply or in the case of the Transformer
If you do not have technical capabilities to evaluate the above, consult a specialized technical service
I hope you can solve the problem

Player will not play a loaded CD and No CD message comes up Also CD drawer opens and shuts on it`s own !!!

the tray opening by itself could be a faulty limit switch on the tray mechanism

the switch tells the system if the tray has reached the open or closed position.

if it closes then opens itself then this is the most likely

check that first

could be closing then opening without actually loading due to the switch

you will need to open it up to find the switches

usually at the bottom front were the tray goes in

My NAD cd player CD slot goes in and then opens...it does not retain the CD inside to play...

Hello
This fault is due to loose tray loading belt or weak loading motor. You just change the loading belt with same type. Never use a belt more than tight. Use the same size. If belt changing does not help, replace the loading motor. OK.

Disk drawer will not open

A small motor turns a belt, which then drives the gear that operates the drawer. Over time this belt stretches or breaks, and the drawer doesn't open. Replacing the belt cures the problem.

I've looked at the couple of belt catalogs I have, and nothing for NAD is listed. You'll need to measure the old belt circumference and thickness. Almost all of these are square belts, usually in the range of 2.5 to 3.5 inches circumference. If you're measuring the old belt, take off 10 to 15% since it has stretched.

A local electronic service shop may have a suitable replacement. Otherwise there are many sources online (MCM Electronics is one I deal with frequently here in the US). In a pinch, you can even use a small rubber band until you find the right replacement.

Hope this has helped. Thanks for using Fixya!

CD drawer stuck, then won't close

1. Most of the player drawer fixed over the chasis for a rigid support
2. try to remove the drawer safely without damagind the chasis and drive mechanism
3. there might be some shaft jam.
4. Look for the thread. how does the player drawer moves in and out
5. there may be some sensors to sense the door close/open. if it is jammed then open/close function cannot be done. why because this problem occurs
6. unwear the mechanism read the mechanism moving technique. see which has got jammed.
7. if you feel too risky then
8.contact service centre... all the best
