It appears that the smoke is excess fat / food splatters that have landed on the grill element. If you had a faulty element it would not work period Also check that any boil overs from pots above are not finding their way to the rear of the element.

have same problem with grill smoking,try barry coates method if this works to stop from happening again there should be a tray that comes with most ovens,flip this over and put on top rack,should stop this problem,then place foil on bottom of oven to catch any spills or buy another tray.. all the best tony gilchrist....

You will probably find it is the grill element that is faulty, a common fault on your brand of oven, to be certain, you need a meter to test it.

grill element is separate from oven element. i assume this is a fan oven. take rear panel off inside the oven and the oven element is exposed and you can often see the damage. toncheck properly, take the rear cover off outside the oven and terminals of the element are in view. check for continuity with a multimeter

hi there sounds like fan oven element at back, don't worry about smoke from grill is more than likley just grease burnning off element, just leave on for a min or two
