Plug in an ethernet cord and type in these numbers in the web address field 192.168.100.1 and enter admin for the username and Motorola for the password and log in.

Otherwise, find the reset button on the router. Press and hold for about 30 seconds to perform factory reset. Then you'll need to reset everything.

SOURCE: How do I make a secure wireless network

If you don't have the manual, you can download it here.

Look at the chapter "Setting Up Your Wireless LAN" (page 64).

Then follow the guide for "Configuring WPA on the SBG900" (page 66).
Try to avoid WEP, since it is easily hackable and only gives the sense of false security. As encryption, choose WPA AES, because it is more secure than TKIP. WPA Authentication should be "local", since you don't want to run a dedicated server.

Some older laptops cannot deal with WPA-AES. In that case you have to fall back to WEP, but try WPA first.

Furthermore you should change the ESSID from "Motorola" to something more specific for you, so other clients don't connect accidentally to your network (page 71).

If you want to enable MAC filtering is up to you and only makes sense if you never have friends or colleagues coming over with a laptop. I would leave it off and enable it at a later point, after you see that everything is running fine.

Don't forget to set up your computers as well! You have to provide the passphrase for them, otherwise they can't connect (see page 75). The way I do it is to create a strong (!) passphrase like "V0y6Mmb90y...", copy it into a text document (use notepad), and save it on a USB stick. form there you can copy it to the field, when Windows (or Mac) asks for the network key.
No typos = no headaches.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

SOURCE: Lost dial tone and phone service

Your phone line might be connected to Telephone 1 not 2. That could be the reason why you are not getting a dial tone.

Is the Motorola SBG900 cable modem gateway a router- that is will it enable file sharing between the computers that share the gateway (one wired, one wireless). If so how is this set up?

you should be able to set up a home network you will have to enable file sharing, if you run through the network setup wizzard in the control pannel it should be fairly straightforward
