Trying to media share a laptop with Windows 7 to a desktop with Windows XP. Laptop is getting the desktops files, but the desktop will not open laptop files (Media Player specifically). Upgraded desktop Media Player to 11 hoping that would solve the issue. Desktop see's other computers but will not play music from them.

Yes it is possible, you have to install the pritner software on your Sons laptop.

1) For sharing, if you have a network printer connected to your router, then select the network option while installing the printer (If you would have given us the printer model and make we could have given step by step instructions).

2) If the printer is connected to your XP computer and you want to share it, share the printer from XP as mentioned in the steps below.

>> Open Printers and Faxes. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
>> Right-click the printer you want to share, and then click Sharing.
>> On the Sharing tab, click Share this printer and then type a share name for the shared printer (e.g. MyPrinter), click on Apply and Ok. (as shown below)



Now goto the Windows 7 laptop and follow the steps as mentioned below,

>> Click Start >> Click on Devices and Printers >> Click on Add Printer (as shown below)


>> A new window will come up, click on Add a network printer (as shown below)


>> The laptop will search the network for the printer and display it on the list, click on the printer and click on next. The laptop will install the software required, do ensure the printer installation disc is in the laptop in case if Windows 7 wont have the driver it will take it from the disc.

It depends on the OS you are using.
If you are using windows XP, upon inserting the cd, click the cd icon on 'My Computer'. When that opens up, you would be open to a 'CD burining' window. Copy what ever you want to copy from the desktop onto that window, then by the left, you would see an option 'Burn these files to CD'. Click it and the CD burning window would be open, insert the cd title, then go on with the burning. When you are done, you would have you data on the cd.

If your OS is windows Vista or windows 7, insert the CD, a dialog box would open up, you would be asked if you want to format the CD, select the option 'live formatting'.
When you are done with formatting, your CD would be like any other flash drive or external disk. You can then copy onto it from the desktop.

Hi, If you want to share files on both computers, you need to check the shared folders option on both version of the operating system. You can right-click on the folder you want to share then choose properties and choose shared option to check both settings. On windows 7, you have to go to Network and Sharing Center to check the setting on your option. you have to to turn on the sharing options and also if there is a password on both computer when you log on , that would be the username and password you need to share the documents.

I would first (on the desktop) go to Printers, select your printer and right click on it and go to Sharing and enable sharing on your printer. Hopefully this will get you going in the right direction. Once you enable sharing on the desktop, you should be able to access it and install the printer on your laptop. Good luck.

To get ahead of myself and answer your question first, your Win 7 machine may automatically load a driver for your shared printer.

Please have a look at the procedure below: (these instructions assume that your XP machine is sharing the HP printer and that your Win 7 laptop can "see" your network and the shared printer connected to your XP desktop computer)

On the Win7 machine, follow these steps:

1) In "Control Panel" click "Add local printer"
2) Create New Port > Local port
3) Port Name is "\\xpcomputername\printername" - without the quotes

(insert the XP's real network name and your printer's real name in the above location)

4) Click <OK>

5) Windows 7 should automatically load a driver allowing you to print on the HP connected to the XP from the Win7 laptop.

ok you will have to set up printer and file sharing on both machines. not to familiar with vista but its similar to xp. if you open my computer or windows explorer right click on the folders you want to share. the Macafee thing not to sure but you should be able to make an exeption for file and printer sharing

make sure both computers are on the same workgroup.. make sure you have the firewall settings to allow incoming connections to your shared files... make sure you have allowed acces to them in windows security panel..if you can access the media then you are almost there with the setting... fasted way is to right click on start choose explore then right click on drive or folder you want to share and then choose share from menu.. it will change your firewall and security settings so long as you have already turned off the windows advisor..

you could try getting a wifi adapter and creating an access point, you can connect that way if your ps3 has wifi I have a laptop with windows XP Pro and have been trying that my desktop PC with Vista Home can see it.

-Desktop PC with Vista Home (Main PC, connected to Internet with Ethernet to a Linksys Wireless Router B and G).
-Get internet thru cable TV (broadband),from this cable modem plugs to router and from router to PC Vista(desktop)
-Linksys Wireless G/B Router
-G-Card for my Laptop Windows XP Pro and
-Playstation 3 capable of sharing info and use printer

At the moment all of them have internet w different IP's (000.000.0.001, 000.000.0.002,etc.). What I want to achieve is that I can use the Printer that is connected via USB to my PC Vista (desktop) and share files. Right now the only thing been able to do is that my PC Vista see my Laptop but Can't find my PC on my laptop. Anybody, Help?
-When I turn On my media sharing in my PS3, my internet on Laptop loses it while PS3 search and find,then, because laptop lost wireless,the PS3 looses the laptop and I get wireless back. I knowis a stupid setting but tired of workin back n forth. Thanks

Make sure domain settings to your server are correct on the notebook computer. These settings are located in the control panel of the system setting.

Whats the operating system of your server?

Make sure the firewall in windows security is turned off too. Sometimes that thing sneaks up on you.

I haven't used the home edition of Vista but another reason why it might not be working is because it isn't the business version. Microsoft might have added extra security to prevent the home version from connecting to a server. I know we use the business version of Vista at work and it is working that way on the intranet server without a problem.

I would check with Microsofts website on that.

Right click on the drive you want to share. Ex: C:\Vol-xx = name. In the pop up window click Sharing & Security. This needs done to all the drives you want access too. To share a printer. Everyone must have the printer drivers installed. The Pc that has a direct connection to the printer must also Share the printer on the network. Open Printer & Faxes, highlight the printer you want to share. Click File than click Sharing follow windows instructions.
Small suggestion regards to the wireless side of the network. Suggest you setup security so others close too you can not tap into your network. (common).
