I only need to print black and white. My black in cartridge is full, my other colors are basically empty. I have it set to black ink only, but it still will not print. What can I do, short of buying more colored ink in a sort of scheisty marketing ploy?
I suggest that you buy a black and white printer. Some of these less expensive models require that both color and black and white cartridges are working to print anything. If your run out of either, your printer stops functioning. I was not able to find a way around that.
I did not want only Black and White. I purchased a better 4 color printer that gives me the option to print in B & W only. I have separate cartridges for each color. In addition, I learned how to refill my ink cartridges at home.
I purchased one refill kit for about $11. It came with two bottles of black, and one bottle of each color: Cyan, Magenta, and Blue. That was over one year ago. I have used that single refill kit to refill my cartridges at least 5 times so far. I have printed thousands of pages since then, and I do not have to buy the expensive replacement colors.
I do not know how long I can continue refilling this set of cartridges. (Note: I had to purchase one set of refill cartridges. That was to get away from the demo cartridges that came with the printer.)
Bite the bullet and be done with it. Get a printer with separate cartridges for each color and then learn how to refill them at home.
I see this message is still posted. So here is an update. Since I posted the above, I have refilled my cartridges at least 4 more times. I am still using the same refill bottles, and I just emptied my first black. Luckily, the refill package came with two bottles of black. If I was still buying my ink cartridges, I am sure that I would have spent enough to pay for my printer. It cost $250. I see it is still on sale too. I am using an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium. I only use the new cartridges to fool the printer into thinking the replacement is not a refill. After awhile, you learn to refill them before they run out. If you refill them before they run out, you do not need to use that extra set that you purchased.

I have the same problem & have been searching for weeks for a replacement printer that will print B & W with one or more colors empty. I haven't had any luck yet - I did run across a post that said: For black and white images and photos, a blend of colors called "composite black" may be used to achieve significantly better image quality and smoother gray tones than can be accomplished with black inks alone. I'm still searching...
