Issue: How do I reset the camera to its default settings?

Solution: Procedure for resetting the camera to default PowerShot SD500

    Resetting the Settings to Default
You can reset all of the menu and button operation settings to default except for [Date/Time], [Language], and [Video System].

    1. Turn on the camera.

    2. Press and hold the <MENU> button for longer than 5 seconds.

The message Reset settings to default? appears on the LCD monitor.

    3. Select [OK] using the and buttons, then press the <FUNC./SET> button.

The screen below appears while resetting. The normal screen resumes when resetting is complete.

To cancel resetting, select [Cancel] instead of [OK].

Settings cannot be reset when the camera is connected to a computer, to an optional direct print function compatible printer (CP series) or to a direct print function compatible BJ printer (optional).

        The following cannot be reset:

            Shooting mode

The Date/Time, Language and Video System options in the (Set up) menu.

White balance data recorded with the custom white balance function.

Colors specified in the Color Accent or Color Swap modes of My Colors.

            Newly added My Camera settings.

Are you saying it will not take a photo? Try replacing/recharging the battery and take a photo of your self, and see if the lens moves freely and the shutter also moves. If that fails it may be a sensor problem (which would be bad news!)

Sounds like you just accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This turns the screen on and off in photo mode to save batteries (you'd then use the optical viewfinder in its place). Just press the button one more time with the camera turned on.

When I upload photos onto my computer from my memory card, there are always two copies of each photo. One copy seems true to life and the other is slightly saturated and grainy. It's frustrating that I...

Those two image files have got to have different prefix letters maybe the same file number but the files are way different as one is shot in a jpg format and the other in a RAW format. Your camera is much more powerful that you think and the features exceed most all point and shoot. What you need to do is change the Recorded Pixels this is on page 80 of the manual I'm going to suggest "L" Large for the best printable quality in a jpg picture.
2 screen shots for this

Note to change the setting you have which is including both RAW and jpg you need to turn off the RAW recording. It's a bit confusing but I'm trying to show your the screen shots with these sequences and that's proving difficult in it's own because it's over multiple pages.
Here is what I've got to show you

The short answer is you need to shut off the RAW recording of an image.

Canon eos 400d how do i get the screen on rear to show the view before i take the picture

I'm afraid you can't view the image on the rear screen before you take the shot. On cameras like these,( semi and professional DSLR's) this is the norm. You view and compose the shot through the viewfinder and then you can check the result and view all your shots on the lcd screen afterwards
