You will have to reinstall the printer/scanner drivers (check on the internet for your type/model and download the drivers if you can't find the original install cd). please reset your printer. turn off your printer, leave it for 30 sec and turn it on again....

same thing happened to me: try this fix
1. open HP photosmart essentials
2. go to the 'get images' blue box location on the view tab
3. click 'from scanner'
4. follow the directions
hope this helps - the printer isn't as useless as i first thought.
