Go to the microsoft website: search: windows 7 sound card drivers. This should bring you too a site with a list of drivers for your sound card.

OR:

Go into the control panel and click on Device Manager. This will bring up a list of components, which will include the sound card that your computer has installed: find your sound card, and right click or double click the item - a dialogue box will appear with a list of options. You want to "update driver". After you click this, another dialogue box will appear asking if you want to select from files on your computer, or automatically search the internet - do the second option (search internet/automatically). If the most current driver is updated, a message will appear alerting you of this. At this point, right click on the sound card item (in list); next, when the dialogue box appears, about the middle section, it should read "This device is working properly". If this message is present, then you may need to go into the sound settings (in Control Panel) and select the appropriate type speakers you are using (laptop/external etc).

If you go to HP Support and then "Drivers & Downloads, enter your machine's Model Number where prompted to. Try installing the Vista driver for sound for your model. Almost all Vista Drivers work in W7. Frankly, I'm surprised W7 didn't just go get the driver for you through Windows Update. Have you installed all Updates, looking also at Optional ones offered? Your sound driver might just be sitting there waiting to be installed.
