Hi Can you not try and get another battery from work to see if it remedies the issue. It seems like the screen doesn't get enough power when not plugged in.
I believe I have found the problem with the 1525 that I am currently working on which has the same problem that you describe. Ultimately I think it's a problem with the inverter in the LCD. When the laptop is powered by battery the brightness is lower than full. When I plug in the power adapter the brightness goes to "full" and I hear a faint sizzle and the LCD's backlight goes off. Same as if you hold the Fn key and press the up arrow to brighten it, it will do the same thing when you reach near the full brightness. So for now I have fixed this problem by going in the Power Options and clicked on Adjust the display brightness on the left. Slide the slider to the left on the "plugged in" part and now when you plug it in it shouldn't make it go blank. I do want to note that I hear a faint buzz coming from the LCD when I plug it in. That must mean the inverter is faulty. WAY TO GO DELL!!!!!!
isa_cpu, Hi there, have you done the flashlight test after screen goes to BLACK? How old is E228WFP ?? Is it under warranty? Did it work "perfectly" the day before? Did you try it at another pc and get same result? If you shine a bright flashlight close to the screen after it goes BLACK, look very closely to see if Win-Desktop is still being displayed on lcd screen. In any case, if you don't own a DMM and soldering iron you still have these options! Call DELL and see if they have a swapout program. You send your's+$40-$90 and they send you a REFURBISHED same model in return with new cold-cathode-fluorescent-tubes w/inverter&smps installed. or Check for local TV/Monitor guy that knows forward&backwards all there is to know about fixing lcd monitors. It may also be informative to search web for Bad Capacitors in LCD Monitors or Repair of LCD monitors and also check YOUTUBE for short vids on LCD repair or disassembly. I'm louie12fix on fixya or lmistyrel@ aol.com Bye for now.
I put a new CR2025 battery in my T5e671 Timex and it solved the problem.
The screen no longer goes blank at any time.
PS:Timex manual says "remove battery strap" to replace the battery.
But it doesn't say HOW.-& I couldn't google an answer to that.
Here is how:
The metal strap goes across the middle of the battery and then goes over the edge of it on both sides.
At both edges the metal strap goes over a nylon tab.
One of those nylon tabs is notched, if you put the end of a paperclip in the notch, you can release the metal strap edge that runs under it.
