Here are the basic steps:
Prepair the new starter rope (about 5 feet of good qualty starter rope size 5.5) by burning the end and shaping into a point and tie a temp knot on the other end. Use a rag to shape the end because it will be very hot. Remove the old rope and align the hole in the spool with the hole on the starter cover and practice incerting the rope thru the guide hole on the cover into hole on the spool . This will be the final action after you wind the spool. You should be able to hold the spool and insert the rope thru both holes and tie a knot while holding the spool in a wound state. Once you have mastered incerting the rope thru both holes and tying a knot you are ready. Now begin.
Wind the spool in the same direction that the spool turns when you pull the rope. You must wind in the correct direction or you may bend the spring out of shape. The spool will begin to tighten as you wind and will eventually stop turning when the spring is fully wound. Once fully wound unwind spool one full turn and stop when hole on spool aligns with hole in cover. Now insert rope as practiced thru both holes and tie knot with free hand or have helping hand. Once knot is tied slowly let spool take rope in untill no more will go in or you reach temp knot. Now tie pull handle and you are done. Good luck.

Fix recoil when pull cord on sanli lawnmower broke

Take the starter assembly off the mower. Unwind the spool using whatever method works (2 screwdrivers?) until you capture the remaining. cord. Pull it all the way out. Pin the spool so that it can't retract. Remove and replace the cord. Re-assemble. Back to cutting grass!

Pull cord stuck open

Most likely the recoil spring broke. The engine cover has to be removed to repair this. If you are not mechanically inclined, it would be best to take it to a local small engine repair shop. Proper replacement involves knowing how many pre-wind rotations is required to properly recoil the rope. Some things are just better left to the pros.

Broken spring in recoil starter on lawn mower

While I have not done this on newer model lawn mowers, I have replaced recoil springs in the past. Here's what I did: First you need to pull the spark plug wire off so the engine will not start. Then block the flywheel with a piece of wood to keep it from turning. Then, using another piece of wood such as a short (6-8 inch) hardwood dowel placed against the ears of the recoil drive, and drive it in a reverse direction (clockwise) with a hammer to knock it loose. It may take several sharp blows to break it loose. The recoil drive is reverse threaded to keep it from coming loose when the engine is running. Once the drive is loose, remove it to get access to the recoil spring which must be replaced if it is broken. With a new spring in place, rethread the recoil drive counter clockwise until it is finger tight. Then, tighten it down with one sharp blow against the wooden dowel.

Fixing a cord recoil on a mtd mower with a 4 hp briggs and stratton engine

The upper covers and the fuel tank needs to come off, the starter on most engines is part of the engine cover so this will have to be un bolted and removed with the starter connected

My starter string broke on my troybilt lawn trimmer, how do i fix it

Disassembly of the covers and controls to that point will be needed. It takes a little bit of work, then you have to preload the spring tension on the recoil unit BEFORE you install new rope. A good little bit of labor involved....somewhat mechanically inlined?
