My Whirlpool Dryer very suddenly stopped running. When I tried it this morning it just made a deep growling sound, for lack of a better description. When I moved the knob to turn the "finished" buzzer off, it worked briefly and has stopped again since then. Now it doesn't even make the growling sound.

SOURCE: dryer not heating up

What you do is remove the rear dust cover. It could be the element located to the right, or it could very well be the Hi Limit mounted atop the heating element chamber. fd54e5e.jpg

SOURCE: Whirlpool Gas Dryer keeps running on auto dry setting

When you moved the sensor wire on the moisture sensor may have fallen off.
Remove the front panel and locate the wire and the connection. It will be on the right side near the lint filter vent. If it is still connected your timer has gone bad.

Old Whirlpool dryer making a growling type noise when you try to start it. It will start sometimes but will stop shortly after. Most times it will not start, it just makes noise. Lint filter on top

That sounds like the motor is faulty. That is a very common failure and one that is easily corrected. The video at the link below shows how to replace the motor in most top filter models.

Whirlpool electric dryer wed5300sq0 runs for like 5 minutes then shuts off....other than that everything works....

Reach inside the dryer and turn the drum. Does it turn easily? If not then it might be rollers or idler or drum glide worn out. Even if the motor needed replacing I would do it on this mdel. Nothing newer is worth a dayum in today's market. You can also try and lube the motor if it is getting hot and quitting. I have some links here:

Occasionally, the unit growls with a loud noise while operating. I stop it and when the frowling stops, I restart it and it works normally for a while. then it will do the same thing again. It cooks...

This is probably lack of lubrication of either the cooling fan or the turntable if it has one.

If the cooling fan fails totally, the magnetron will fail so service the unit immediately.

Drum drive/motor growling, also very brief repeated hesitation audible

Dale you are correct, the dryer has a part starting to fail. If you remove the top and shift the cabinet the noise may increase or decrease. If this happens, then the rear panel is bent in that supports the rear bushing. You can replace that to resolve this. If the noise doesn't change, I suggest you check the blower, Sometimes the blower will spin freely on the motor shaft and cause a noise. Since this blower wheel also cools the motor, it could be spinning. Try removing the blower and add a washer behind it to tighten it to the motor shaft. This is just a press fit blower wheel. If that doesn't resolve the issue, then replace the blower wheel. Hope this helps.
