My ps3 was working fine until I did the 2.3 firmware update..now the system won't read any discs it was only not reading blu ray but now its no discs..I am not under warranty anymore..I have tried using a lens cleaner which didn't work..Any suggestions...
I called the Sony helpline, who were not very helpfull and told me that it could'nt be anything to do with the update as it has'nt happened to anyone else! My brother has been playing COD all weekend and it has crashed a few times and had to be turned off at the power switch or at the socket in the wall.... i heard that its a bad idea to turn the PS3 off this way without quitting game shutting down the machine from the main menu.
(we also downloaded a few Guitar hero songs from playstation store that crashes the machine every 3rd attempt)

and try your best to shut down the system from the main menu

I have the 80gig ps3 i played CoD4 it froze on me while respawning and now it wont read any of my games cds, blu ray, dvds WTF!!!! and GTA is bout to come out DAM!!!

Make sure that your firmware is updated correctly. Also make sure the games are the correct region for the unit you're playing on. You may have an incorrect region setup on the PS3. PS3 games are region locked, either being PAL or NTSC. If the PS3 is set to read PAL (by being set to a region that is PAL, like the UK, Europe, and Japan) it will not read or play an NTSC disc.
Misconfigured or corrupted firmware installations can also cause this problem. Furthermore, pirated games will not play, because they do not have the appropriate security key on the disc.
You can try testing this by creating a new profile on the PS3 and trying to play the games. If you can play them with the new profile, then there is a corruption with the old profile. If you can't play them in the new profile, then it could be the firmware.
Lastly you may have a blown drive. Most PS3 games are dual layer blu ray discs capable of storing large amounts of data. The blu ray drive in the PS3 uses a sequenced dual laser to read the game. If one of the laser emitters has blown, it won't read the game correctly. However, since it doesn't use both emitters to read blu ray movie disks or dvds they'll still play correctly.
You will not be able to play some newer disc because of the technology embedded in them. The updates allow for those necessary files to be implemented into your system giving it the ability to play games and blu rays. Get your system updated.
Download the firmware from the
playstation official website onto a usb
stick. Follow the instructions on the website at: www.playstation.com (the update will be at the bottom of the page, on the right side.)
go to your ps3 BD data utilites under video and delete the storage you have from the previuos discs you have played. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND SFTER FOLLOWING THIS STEP THE PREDATORS DISC WORKED FINE.
It might just be coincidence that your blu-ray drive has packed up at the same time as the update. Ring up Sony and tell them this and you could get a new console for free if your in the warranty.
Do need the internet, just go into your settings tab on the intro menu for the PS3 and hit system update. Use the via internet option and it finds the newest version...2.70. Takes a bit to download but, when it's done you get to enjoy watching the otherwise $30 drink coaster.
You are Partially right.
Ps3 actually work with 2 different diode laser inside.one is Blue and one is red and both working on 2 separate circuit but with the same coil.i do believe the blue diode is dead or defective and that`s why you are able to read dvd(regular one) but no blu ray dvd or ps3 games.Try to clean your lens or replace your laser and you will resolve your problem

i always used to downloadthe latest updates, but one day all over sudden it stopped reading CD's of all sorts
