Barrel slides I have recently obtained a secondhand Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM lens.It is in beautiful condition and the autofocus and manual zoom work fine. Pictures also are fine. The one operational flaw is that when pointed downward the lens barrel will slide out from 100mm position to near the 200mm position with little resistance. Conversely, if set at just lower than 200mm and pointed upward it quickly! slides in to 100mm position. Is this problem something that you are familiar with and if so, what is your recommendation, considering difficulty and expense, to correct? Regards, David.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will try the rubber band fix. I am thinking that the band will sit on the front edge of the outer barrel and overhand just enough to ride on the inner barrel as it moves to create drag. If that is not right, please correct me.Thanks for the suggestion, I will try the rubber band fix. A fat rubber band tight enough to stop the barrel movement, but not so tight it restricts manual zooming is the best, extremely effective, low-tech fix for this problem - I have done it for years

Your 100mm lens autofocus not working.it may be due to autofocus flex cable inside the lens damaged. It is replaceable part. You may have to contact service technician. However when you switch to manual mode it should focus & click. Try it.
You can download the manual from the manufacturer's web site at

I don't mean to insult your intelligence. You did check the Manual/ Autofocus switch on the side of the lens, yes? Maybe move it back and forth a couple times?
Is there a Macro switch on the lens? If so, adjust the lens-by hand- to where it lets you set the switch back to normal 75-300. You may have to zoom it out to 300 before you can slide that off Macro.
Try shutting down the camera and then back on ? Remove lens and reinstall it?
Compare the electrical contacts on the lens to your other Canon lenses?
It could just be that one in 10,000 that is defective outa the box.
Get the Canon EF 70-300mm IS USM about $500 and EFS 17-85mm IS USM about $300. The 75-300 all of them I would not use them 4 a body cap. Camera is fine or step up to XSI.
there is a manual for the 40d kit with that lens. probably does not have exactly what your looking for but there is some useful info about that lens here is the link .
