What is the e-mail software?? Outlook Express or Outlook (Office)???, Than you need to give me more information as what happend, what you did, if it's Office Outlook you could try finding the .PST file somewhere on the drive, than point Outlook back to it...
Click (start), click (search), click (for files or folders...), use the search companion to search for a file with the (.pst) extenssion, if you find a .pst file it could be that one, than you need to point Outlook to it by opening (Control Pannel), than click on (Mail), click (Data files...) button, than the (Add) button, than choose Office Outlook personal folders (.pst) than click OK, now point to the correct file and save... every thing should be OK

Do you mean that your inbox has many years of mails and only the 6 months mails went away somehow?
Start OE, click on Tools -> Options -> Maintenence. Then double click the Store Folder path and press Ctrl-C to copy it to clipboard.
Start -> Run then press Ctrl-V and press enter
Check there in case your mails were in different folders. In case there are any numbered files in this folder like inbox[1].dbx .... then we know that is the problem.
There are ways to get the data but first you need to identify.
