Husqvarna Viking Designer 1 embroidery machine. I have a Do All Quilter's Hoop which I can't use unless my embroidery unit gets a mechanical update by dealer. He has not been able to fix it, can you recommend a solution that I can pass on to him? I would love to use this hoop. Thanks .
I'm a bit amazed that a Husqvarna technician was unable to do the minor adjustment to the embroidery arm - he needs to contact Husqvarna headquarters and ask for instructions. Meantime, you can still use your hoop (which by the way is my favourite hoop - it's a little beauty!). Tell your machine you are going to use the Large Hoop (6" x 9.5" or 150mm x 240mm) even though you are really using the 6" x 6" or 150mm x 150mm Do It All Hoop. Provided you have centred your design before loading it on your USb stick or floppy drive, it should work. However, just to reassure yourself, use the Check Size button on your touch screen to test the outside size of the embroidery and be sure it is not going to foul on the hoop borders. (It is the one on the second screen (press More to access this) once your have loaded your design - looks like little double arrows pointing to the corners of a square. Each time you press this button, the needle will zoom to each outer corner of your design in turn.

$50 seems a bit steep. I'm not sure just what has to be done, but it is not a major hardware makeover. I think it is more along the lines of an adjustment to the embroidery arm. His "excuse" that your machine was built before the hoop came on the market is somewhat feeble - 90% of Designer 1 machines are in this situation. Next time your machine is in for a service, get it done then. The labour charges should be reduced since he is not disassembling the machine solely for the upgrade. Just be sure to take the emb. arm in too (which by the way should be serviced every now and then also). The grey knob on the emb. unit will be changed to a dark grey one so future owners will know it has had the upgrade. Another thing - you need the machine software to be running at least version 2.1 I think - at least one of the latest versions - for the hoop to show up in the hoop selections.
To be frank Pamsquilt, since you admittedly don't know what has to be done, I'm amazed that you would continued to discuss this problem and go so far as to comment on price. If you don't know, leave it at that. Now, for anyone that may still be wondering about this problem, the Designer 1 was built to recognize about 10 hoops. Since Husqvarna keeps making hoops that fit your machine, they need to allow modification of the machine to accept more. The upgrade replaces the connector that holds your hoop on the embroidery unit. You then have 2 triggers for the hoop sensor instead of 1. One could recognize about 10 different hoops so now each position on the second trigger will recognize 10 hoops. I sell the upgrade kit for $15 and I charge $35 to install it. When it has been installed, before putting the arm cover on, the installer should verify the sensor position by connecting to a Designer 1, in the service mode, and verify that the adjustable position of the sensor is correct. If this position is not correct, you may start getting errors about having the wrong hoop installed, which we got rid of with a software update long ago. No one wants to see this error message again, so please allow your authorized dealer to install your upgrade properly. The part number of the upgrade kit is 412628603, and the instruction sheet is included.
Reasonable dealers will check your machine to see if it needs the adjustment ot take extra hoops and do it as part of the deal of buying the hoop. They do this because they know you will continue to purchase from them. If they appear too grasping customers go elswhere.

I just got the Quilter's Hoop as a Christmas gift and had the same problem.My money-hungry local dealer (who sold me the machine in the first place!) wanted $75 to upgrade my machine and said it would be at least 2 weeks to get the part. (The last time she told me that, for the dual-feed foot, after waiting more than 6 weeks, I ordered it online -- paid $50 less and had it in a few days!) This time I found a wonderful Brother dealer who spoke to his Viking dealer friend. Said friend ordered part and Brother dealer did upgrade for me -- for cost of part - $15! He also upgraded the machine's software so that it knows I have that hoop. It all works great now. (The part that is actually replaced is the gizmo on the embroidery arm that you fasten your hoop into, which reads the size of the hoop. It isn't that hard to replace and likely any good sewing machine technician can do it, once he gets the part. I watched it being done.) -- Good luck!

Dls8864's suggestion was a very good suggestion - make sure the metal stitch plate is pushed all the way to the back. Also make sure that the thread is feeding freely - if it is catching on something it can cause the needle to be pulled aside and make it break. Does the design fit properly inside the hoop you are using? If the foot and/or needle strike against the side of the hoop, that will cause a breakage. Is the bobbin thread okay - not making a bird's nest underneath?

Hi, I have just bought the Do it All Hoop for my Designer 1 embroidery machine too ! My machine would not accept this hoop until I placed the 180 x 130 on the machine, inserted the floppy dics with the design for a 150 x 150 hoop, checked the position on the machine as suggested and then changed the 180 x 130 hoop to the Do it all Hoop and it worked!!!!!!!!!! My machine has the light grey button on it too!! So before you start your design just load it first telling the machine you will use the 180 x 130 hoop check placement and the replace the hoop with the 150x150 ! Hope you can understand what I am saying. Good Luck
Don't forget to check the placement. Your machine expects the larger hoop and will continue to sew, even if it comes to the edge of the hoop.
