Do you have a Briggs or kohler engine.I am having the same problem.I have changed the fuel filte, fuel pump, and cleaned the carb.Sears has been no help at all.The reason I ask about the engine you have is that people are having the same problem no matter what engine they have.So therefore it probably is not the engine so it is something else on the mower. My mower runs fine for about 10-15 then starts to stutter and backfire.I am continuing to pursue this problem and I will post back here if I come up with anything.

Go to Craftsman, Order Tree or Parts Tree.com and input your model number. Choose the correct tab and go to the mower deck. It will give you a good over view of how the belt routes. Hope this helps.

Specifications, for Craftsman Riding Mower, Model 247.289010. Quanity for oil.

Without an oil filter you will need approx. 48 oz. With an oil filter about 18 oz more. Hope this helps. You should have dipstick to register when it is full.

Sears Craftsman riding mower V belt getting chewed

I believe you may have the belt over one or more of the belt retainers next to the pulleys. They are 5 or 6 inches long and about a 1/4 inch in diameter. You have to loosen them when you put the belt on then adjust them to where they are just barely touching the back of the belt. They keep the belt from jumping off.

I have a Craftsman Riding mower 17 HP, 42"cut. It runs for ~30 minutes then shuts off like it's out of gas, but it's not. Won't restart for ~30 min. Can anyone help

check for fire to the plug after it dies....if there is no fire then its possible that the coil is breaking down and needs to be replaced.

Runs for awhile then will quit

Have the fuel lines or engine shielding been modified at all? Has the fuel filter been changed?
If all of that is OK, remove the fuel line from the tank at the fuel pump, remove the fuel fill cap, gently blow air back through the fuel line so you can here bubbles in the tank. The "tank pre-filter" could be plugged.
Let me know.

First I'd try lubricating the relevant moving parts. Spray with WD-40 everywher that makes sense.

If that doesn't help it work better, please, get bck to me.
