You need a internet connection if you are using google maps. Otherwise it wont show any maps. Google maps downloads all map data from internet and doesnt save anything on the phone.
You could buy Navigon mobile navigator but its kinda expensive.
Hello a new screen would cost just as much as replacing the unit.
Check out Magellan roadmate line the 1430 and 1470 sell for under $150 and have excellent maps, smart touch screens for entering addresses and more sensitive GPS receivers than even just two tears ago.
If you are set on staying with that model I would try finding a used one on ebay or craigslist.
You will need to go to the manufacture's website and download the latest software update which contains map updating. Make sure the update is the one for your device
Well after many emails to Navigon I got the fix for my 2000s What you have to do is download the 1.2 version software for the 5100 install it on a 2GB micro SD Card. Put it in the slot and turn it on. You will have to regester as if you have a 5100 but it will work. The reason you have to use a 2GB card is the maps are to large to go on the internal memory.
