Check the set up. You may have closed captioning turned on which will show up as a black box if there is no closed captioning information for the selected channel. If that fails to resolve the problem, update this.
Make sure the TEXT and CAPTION options are turned off.
I am not sure about the Sonny's, but on my Toshiba a black box appears when I inadvertently leave one of the close captioning (CC) on for text or captions on (such as CC1, CC2, etc.).
That's the captioning box, alright. Check through the options on your menu, or read through your owner's manual to get rid of that. There also should be a captioning key on your remote.
If there is no audio as well then this suggest that the digital box is at fault. The fact that you can watch DVD's proves this fact. Unplug the digital box for 2 minutes and then re-try. Good luck.
