Sharp Carousel Model R 1480 door latch stopped working door won t stay closed. Is it just a spring that won't force the two latch hooks to stay in place?
Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.
If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.
The door latch head (hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

Solution #2 worked PERFECT. It was much easier in the end than I thought. The plastic spring holder on the door body snapped. I simply opened the circular end of the spring a bit so it works like a hook, and attached it to the metal frame of the door by he window... works like a charm, and no chance of breakage moving forward. Just saved $200- NICE. Thanks to all for the help with this, and if you have the same problem- BE BRAVE and fix this- it's easier than you think.
Thanks to all who posted this info. I used the instructions above to take apart my microwave over door and found several pieces of broken plastic which were used to secure the latch spring. I found one of these common plastic micro hooks(see link below) worked well as a replacement. Just add a bit of monkey glue to secure the hook to the door.

Microwavesvc, that's what I've had happen with my sharp also, I carved a hook out of a piece of plastic and then epoxied it in, and haven't had any more problems with that.
Another problem I've had with the sharp (that just reoccured, I'm trying to figure it out) is that the micro-switches that the door latch push have gone bad. Originally just one went bad and I replaced it, now the micro has the light and fan on, and won't recognize being closed...
I have also fixed this issue in same manner..just hang the spring to the metal body.. that will work without any worry.
Unplug the microwave, remove the screws from the top section where the air blows out (the hood). You will then see the screw that holds the control panel in place. Remove the control panel by lifting it straight up while wiggling it. Mine was sort of stuck in place from old gunk and stuff, but after wiggling back and forth it did come out. You will see a white plastic piece that opened the microwave door inside the bottom that is probably broken. I used gorilla glue to fix mine. I gave it a full day to dry before replacing the plastic piece. I also had to open the MW door by sliding a putty knife up to release the latch in order to replace the piece of plastic. By the way, the microwave did not work until this pirce of plastic was reinstalled. Good luck!
Sharp R1850 convection. The door would not release, replaced part number 947069 Open Leaver p/n 947069 and it worked fine. Now the unit will not heat anything and the light inside is not on. Could this be a fuse and where is it located or what??? Any experience
Same problem came out one morning and the door was ajar and the light was on. removed plastic inner door panel carefully with a flat screwdriver and there was the spring retainer laying in the door bottom. i could see where it was affixed so i used locktite super glue and set it then reinforced it with water weld by j-b weld and puttied that around it entirely. works like new!
Had our r-1505 unit door quit closing as well. Once I figured how to get inside the door I found the little plastic part had broken off the plastic door body. Considered gluing it but seemed I'd be hoping too much. Found some 1/8 thick plastic put a small screw into it, cut it small enough to fit the area, little super glue. Now it is better than it was new.
Sue, bless you .... thank you so much! Fishing line did the trick and it's really strong. First time the spring was a bit too loose to my liking, but the second time I shortened it and it did the trick. Such a wonderfully simple easy idea!

We have this same problem and my husband removed the door and it is indeed the latch. It appears that a small piece of plastic that attaches the spring broke off. It cannot be repaired. Do you suggest buy a new door for the microware or just buy a new microwave? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Between being able to view the manual on-line and the suggestion of gluing the broken tab- my microwave now works again!
The Manual showed how to remove the door- then disassemble the door. I took it apart without breaking anything. Then I found the broken tab. I glued it back into place- using a good glob of Rhino/Gorilla glue. I let it set up and dry for about 2-3 days- to be sure it got good and hard. Then I reassembled the door, re-hung it and it has been working fine for about a month.

The door on my Sharp Microwave R-1610 also wouldn't stay closed for the same reason as everyone posted. As it turned out, it was the plastic hook on the inside of the door - - it had snapped off. I couldn't seem to glue back on .... but I did find a GREAT solution .... DENTAL FLOSS - - yes, it can be used for many things.
I thred the dental floss through the bottom hole where the latch hook dowel went and then tied it to the bottom of the spring (where the spring should have attached to the broken piece of plastic on the inside of the door). The dental floss is fine enough to thread through the hole along with the dowel, yet strong enough to have the spring pull on it.
So far, so good ............ not sure how long it will last. Worse case scenario, I can take it apart and do it again within 10 minutes - - I may end up using really fine guage wire instead next time.

Not hard to fix, at least for me it was just out of adjustment internally! I had to take the cover off to readjust the door! Nothing was broken, only took about a half hour to complete!

Mostly this is a problem since the manufacturer is so fond of using plastic that breaks. the mounting tab for the spring breaks off and the door hook has no spring to hold it closed. I typically have fasioned a metal pin through the door hook that will never break off. Often though it is a tab on the inside of the outer door that breaks off. So again you must make a new securing point for the door spring. I do not trust glue to hold these things and never found a glue that really sticks to this plastic. So I typically will place a small stainless screw and nut somethere in that mounting area and attach the spring to that. More permanent fix that will not break off. Better than New!!!
