Router connection We have 3 laptops, one of which is permanently connected to the router via an ethernet cable. Since changing internet providers, the other 2 have trouble connecting to the router most times and we have to turn the router off and then back on again for them to connect. A friend has told us that the router should be turned off after use and turned on when needed as the IP addresses change. Is this correct? Can you help us with this problem?

If you can connect to the internet using the Ethernet cable on your laptop then the cable modem is configured correctly.
If you want to connect to the Internet using the D-Link wireless router then first you need to configure the D-Link wireless settings and then configure the wireless card in your laptop with the D-Link's wireless settings. Remove the Ethernet from the laptop and connect it to the WAN/Internet port on the D-Link wireless router.

put another lan card in pc
share your connection using ICS from network properties from first one
put a straight cable from pc to router

give the gateway of router to laptop
remember!! the class of ip's should be the same

Not quite sure what your problem is......BUT
If you want to know how to set up your network equipment.
You should have a cable coming into your house with your internet/tv services. This has a "F" type screw connector on the end.
This screws into the back of your Internet providers "MODEM".
You connect the MODEM to your ROUTER with an ETHERNET cable (this has RJ45 plugs on). It plugs into the WAN socket on the router.
When first setting up the router, connect the router to the pc with an ethernet cable, log into the router via your browser. change the settings as needed, and set the security to WGA2 if possible.
Create a security password, save your settings, unplug the ethernet cable from your pc/laptop and try and connect via WIFI.

It is possible .. just get youself an ethernet cable .. connect one end to your router and the other end to the back of the pc ( ethernet port ) .. and u will be connected via the wire.. You can disable the wireless connection from the router for that you can either call your Internet service provider or the netgear support team.

Ethernet cable means CAT5 or UTP for others or LAN cable. The connection should be LAN port of your computer to LAN1 of your router.

And you can connect also the internet cable usually ethernet cable from your internet provider directly to (ethernet cable)WAN port of your router to get signal from your internet provider.

Also if you get this message, this could also means you still don't set up or configure the router's settings to communicate when your LAN and router. They must see each other to access the router's utility webpage.

Click start
click run
type cmd then ok
type ipconfig
take note of gateway address
type this into a web browser
it will ask for username password try these:
admin/admin
admin/blank
blank/admin
admin/password
root/admin
root/password
root/blank
by blank I mean enter nothing
When you login to the modem click on the wireless settings and record the wpa/wep key this is what you need to login through wireless.

Do you need to see the desktop or just share folders from each other? If the latter then you need to do the following:

Use Windows Explorer and select a folder you want to share. Right click and select sharing and security.

On the sharing tab click on Share this folder. Enter a share name ( I like to enter the PC name _folder name; Rick1_Downloads)

Click on Permissions. If your ok with everyone using the PC's and Laptops having access then highlight Everyone and click on Full Control.

Do this on each PC and Laptop.

That should be it or darned near close.

You have to check if your computer can connect to the modem with an Ethernet cable. This will tell you if the ethernet port on the modem is working. if that does not work call your cable provider.

Next thing after you get the instructions above done.

Press the reset button on the back of the router> press it in for 30 seconds then let go and pull out the power. Connect the router up the way it should be before you reset by the way. check if you have internet if you do not follow hte directions at teh link below.
