Sony Vaio VGN-AR71J Windows 7 upgrade issue

Hi there. I'm hoping someone can assist. I have a Sony VGN-AR71J purchased in the UK that came with Vista Home Premium 32bit and want to do a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. Only problem is that Sony don't support the upgrade and as a result the hard keys (volume, Eject and S1 & S2) and Brightness Fn keys don't work. If I do an upgrade they all work flawlessly however I'm left with a lot of installed Sony bloatware that I can't completely remove so clearly the files that Sony provides for Vista all work with Windows 7. The laptop however only comes with recovery partition that I haven't been able to crack and the Sony website has limited driver downloads available.(eg The SFEP file is a .sys file only not an .exe and there is no Sony Utilities DLL file to download either.) I noticed that there was a similar post to assist with the AR51 and hoped that someone might be able to shed some light on this model. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply however I have no problems with installing Windows 7. The issue here is finding the files that will allow me to use the laptops hard keys. If I can even get just the volume and eject buttons working that would be fine as the Special keys S1 & S2 and the brightness Fn keys are not essential.(It would be nice to get them if possible.) Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the reply but I'm afraid that wouldn't be any help. The hard keys on the laptop rely on a number of files that will have to be manually installed and I don't have access to them as Sony don't officially support my model even though it's less than 3 years old. There was a similar post for the model AR51 where someone apparently had links to the types of file required and I was hoping that they might be able to assist with my laptop. Again any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. This might be a last resort however looking at the list of files I'm not sure that the requisite files are there. I believe that there are around 4 or 5 required files to be installed and hope that someone may have a link to the ones that I cant get from the Sony support site for this model. Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for all the replies. Does anyone have any information about where I can find the files mentioned for a Vaio VGN-AR series laptop to allow the dedicated hard keys to function. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

After clean windows installation you may try to update intel graphic drivers by using the "Intel Driver Update Utility" from Intel Web Page.

The intel graphic cards needs to be updated. Run the program and install the required updates and restart windows. As I read from one of the forums this solves sound problem of the HP laptop.

I am not sure but it may help you. At least your intel drivers will be updated.

Waiting your comments.

Kind Regards.

Thanks for the reply but I'm afraid that this model has a discreet Nvidia Geforce 8400M Graphics driver that has to be downloaded from the Sony Website. That one at least they do provide on their support site. I do know that I need the 'Sony Shared Library', 'Sony Utilities DLL & Settings Utility Series', 'Vaio Event Service' and 'SFEP' files however only a couple of these are available to download directly. I know that the files exist albeit not directly from Sony and hope that someone might be able to guide me to them. Thanks.

Not sure if this will help you, but it looks like it might:
http://restore-disk.com/restoredisks/Sony/SonyVGN/Sony-VGN-AR71J-Windows-7-Restore-Disk-322771.html
As a sidenote, there are reasons Sony isn't supporting the upgrade, and you're experiencing some of them. Maybe this recovery disk will help you, good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Spotted this myself but not sure if it contains the requisite files from what they list. Sony don't support the upgrade because they are unfortunately not customer centric enough to step back from their current line up of hardware to help those who supported them just a few short years ago. I know it's not a compatibility issue because all of the functions work perfectly if you do a Vista to Windows 7 upgrade.( The issue then however is putting up with all of the bloatware that comes pre-installed and never seems to remove entirely no matter how hard you try) It would just be nice if they made the files available to download from their support website rather than have us chase the net looking for them. Cheers.

The solution which I'm about to provide you will erase all the data from your laptop hence, data backup is what you shall think first.
In order to do a fresh install on your laptop you are first required to format your HDD completely. You are required to delete all the partitions on it and recreate new partitions. Your version of Vista home is not allowing to upgrade to windows 7 because both of them are through Microsoft. You have three options at this stage to completely format your HDD
1. Use a DOS bootable CD. Go to any XP PC. Put a new CD inside it right click on CD driver in explorer select Format and then check on create a DOS startup disk. It will make a dos bootable CD put that CD in your laptop and boot through CD it will take you to command prompt. In command prompt you type format C: then again type format D: do it for all the partitions your laptop has if format doesn't work then you can use deltree command. Once the partitions are formatted you can boot through your Win7 CD and install the OS.
2. Use a linux installer CD. boot through Linux installer CD install linux on your laptop and then install win 7 on it.
3. Use a third party disk management tool through which you can boot and erase all the partitions on your laptop.

For install fresh copy of windows 7 you need to buy windows 7 disk if you haven't win7 disk.
Then insert windows 7 disk into computer then when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or del or ALT + F2 key to enter in bios then go to boot emnu and set first boot device as cd/dvd rom then save settings and exit.
Then it boot with windows 7 disk then follow the procedure and choose install new windows option.
Then it take 30 to 45 minutes for completing the installation .
Then install driver for windowsd 7 from below link.
Click on above link then select your model and then windows 7 download all drivers and install then it will work fine.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

I have recently installed Windows 7 on my VGN-N250E. It does not recognize my sd-card. Does anyone know where i can find sd-card driver for win7 for sony vaio VGN-N250e?

Hi,

I checked the information and found that the computer does not qualify for a Windows 7 Upgrade from Sony. But as we have tried, Windows Vista drivers work with Windows 7 as the core for both the OS is same. I suggest that you download install Memory Card driver for Windows Vista from the below link to resolve the issue with the SD Card. I have also provided the link to download Sony Shared Library which you should install first.

Hi gawaynelcy ,

As you have installed the Windows 7 Operating System in the Computer, it is required to re-install the Drivers and Software in the Computer to fix this issue. Installling the following files in the in the given order should fix the issue.

http://s02.download.sony.com/US/pc/SOAVCC-70192539-US.EXE

Please download each file and save it on the Desktop. After that, please double click on the downloaded file to begin the installation. Please make sure that you restart the Computer after each installation for the settings to take the effect. This should fix the issue.

I'd suggest ring back Sony support and tell them that your OS is Windows 7 - not Vista. Therefore, you need the upgraded VGA driver because the Vista driver is incompatible with Windows 7. Hope it all goes well. If my suggestion works for you, please do rate me. Thanks
