Put into nuetral, undo the five bolts around lower unit, take off sideplate halfway down leg casing, loosen the two bolts clamping the gear rods together, then lower unit should slide down[if driveshaft isnt stuck in the crankshaft spline].assembly is reverse, but take care putting water tube back into rubber grommet, and tighten gear rod clamp only after making sure that g/box is in nuetral, when gear lever also in nuetral,or matched together

Testimonial: "thank you so much for you help on the johnson 25hp lower unit . without your help we never could have done it. it is put back together and works great!!! keep up the great work. mamawhughes"

Is their a Manual for a Johnson 1987 25 HP outboard motor?

Moved to a better category

Details for older engines
https://shop.evinrude.com/category/342499/Literature

Parts Manual
https://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/7700.cfm

Factory service manuals and Clymer type manuals are available for a small cost and are worth the outlay.

I have a 1998 model E25RMECA I NEED TO KNOW WHAT TYPE GAS TO USE IN IT. AND IF IT IS 2 CYCLE OR 4CYCLE.

I found a mixture of sites for the information
one owner of a 1998 25 hp evinrude says that it is a 2 stroke with a fuel mix ratio of 50:1 as 25:1 is a bit smokey
another site says that the recommended octane fuel rating is 87 although it might run better on 91
best advice is to find an evinrude service dealer and get the right information as the later 25 hp units are etec engine which will be 4 strokes

I have a 1998 Johnson 130 hp outboard motor. Have already taken lower unit off but can't get it apart. Is there a secret to taking the lower unit apart? I would like to have a diagram.

Here is a site where you can purchase the service manual to repair your outboard motor:

I have a 1971 85 hp joahnson outboard that is getting fuel but no spark from the plugs it cranks over but no spark... any ideas???

What you have is a bunch of parts that you need. There are very few repair shops that would consider the repair. Being an employee many years ago of such parts....Try googling, Antique motor parts/ johnson. or elaborate as OMC / Evinrude/Johnson. You can still find a parts guy that can help you (very rare) search the web and hope it turnes out Okay! BeeCee

Where does the water exit a 1971 25 hp evinrude? how do I know it's pumping water?

I do believe the water jets are down on the lower unit by the prop. There should be a white swirl of white bubbles shooting out.

1971 125els71c johnson stuck in forward

Try taking the shift cable off and just work with the engine. Right now you don't know if the shifter on the boat is stuck. I would then pull on the motor lever to the neutral side and grab the prop(take wires off sparkplugs) and try to turn the prop backwards. If that fails see if the shift rod is jammed under the cover. You may have to pull the lower unit, but you want to know if the shift rod is the culprit or the internal gearbox.
