In general, a DAT file is a generic data file that contains data in text or binary format. They are typically found as winmail.dat files in email attachments, created by Microsoft Exchange Servers. The DAT can be created by a couple of other programs as .dat files as well.
You can check on this article "DAT Video Player Download and Operation Tips" to find some programs to play DAT file.

Hi,

You can use Media Player Classic or vlc media player to play VCD's

Get Media Player Classic here >>>>>>>>

http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/

Get vlc media player here >>>>>>>>>>>

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

If i were you i'd download and install both the Media Players. You can play HD movies with Media player classic and just about anything with vlc media player.

Regards.

How do I get a CD movie to operate in the inspiron 1200 laptop? After I load the CD, what is the process that I use to access the CD, so that I can begin to play the movie?

if it is a video cd - it can be opened from Windows Media Player, Winamp, Nero Vision and many other video players available on net. By inserting the CD inside, windows will open a dialog box asking you, with which program you want to open it - just select the program and press ok.

But for playing any video cd manually, if it is a VCD - open CDROM from my computer - Open "MPEGAV'" folder - and play any file with extension ".dat"

For playing Video DVD - Open CDROM from My Computer - Open "Video_TS" folder - Play any file which is having extension ".BUF".

How can i change the format that my "magix Photostory CD & DVD" program burns my pictures/music to a DVD that WILL play on a home DVD player and not just a computer? I have a Windows XP

There are three ways to create a Video CD (VCD) that contains your photo stories:
You can obtain Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition and view the Photo Story 3-authored WMV file in Photo Story 2 by going to Play your story or create a video CD of your story and then create a VCD.using the Photo Story 2 Video CD-burning feature.
• You can obtain Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10 or above and view the Photo Story 3-authored WMV file in the Photo Story that comes with the Digital Image Library and save and burn to VCD.
• You can obtain VCD-authoring products that work with Photo Story files, such as MyDVD by Sonic Solutions or InstantCD\DVD by Pinnacle Systems. You can use these software to convert the Windows Media video (WMV) files into files that can be copied to a DVD and played in a DVD player.
Note: VCD and DVD-authoring software is not included with Photo Story 3.

DVD Movie

By default, Windows does not include a DVD decoder (which is what you need to watch DVDs).
If you are using WMP10: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/plugins.aspx
If you are using WMP11:
http://savvybytes.com/2006/10/02/playing-dvds-with-windows-media-player-11/

Install the codec and you will be able to watch DVDs!

Converting .DAT files to DVD Files

I guess that this file is from a VCD? If you just burn that file onto a CD as a data CD it should play in your DVD player. The AVSEQ01.dat file is already a (S)VCD file. It is in MPEG format and should be playable on a DVD player as is. Alternatively you can import the file you want to burn into nero vision. Once it is imported then choose to export the file as an MPEG file or burn direct to DVD. Please update the question & let us know if the information given was useful to you - Good Luck!
