Have you considered NOT connecting the camera to the computer?

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use Canon's software, or any other photo cataloging program.

The HP Image Zone or HP Photosmart software is not installed on the computer. Install the HP Image Zone or HP Photosmart Software, or see Using Your Camera without Installing the HP camera software in your camera User's Manual. The computer is configured such that it cannot recognize the camera as a digital camera using the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) standard. Set the USB configuration in the Setup menu on the camera to Disk Drive mode.

- XP computer does not recognize sony mavica cd 500 camera when plugged into USB port - thumbdrive is recognized - camera and cable work on another computer

Reload the driver and software on the PC. Since the camera works on another PC and the thumb drive is seen in the XP PC, the problem must be with the driver in the XP PC. If this camera has NEVER worked with the XP PC, make sure it is compatible with that operating system.

Camera undetected by computer

Although I haven't had this issue with my S2 IS specifically, I have with 2 other digital cameras. The solution in both cases was to power the camera on BEFORE plugging in the USB cable.

In other words - Plug the computer end of the USB cable into the computer, do not plug the camera end in. Power up the camera in "picture view" mode, THEN plug the USB cable into the camera.

Not sure about Vista, but with XP, you should hear the familiar "Dong-ding" as the system recognizes the camera.
