I go to press the power button and the camera lens will come out but go back in at least 4 times and where the light lites up it usually is green but its just red. I can however plug the camera into the computer and get previous pictures on it. But the lends just won't stay out and while this is happening the lcd screen doesn't display anything. HELP!
Like Stanman309, I was upset because the camera was only 3 months old. I'd taken less than 1,000 pictures before this problem started happening. I took a chance and held the lense when it came out. Instead of holding it for a split second, I held it through the whole cycle and the camera turned off with the lense still out. Then I turned the camera on and the lense retracted, came out and then the LCD displayed the setup information (M/D/Y and Time). After that it has worked fine, no problems.
So i was super pissed because my camera was broke and i decided to get on the internet. this is exactly what happened to my camera, i was messing around with it and turned it on and once the lense came out i held the smallest part for a split second and then a small POP sound and now it works fine. seems like something was stuck in there or was holding it back caused by it opening and closing over the years. it worked for me not saying it could work for you but its worth a try might save you 80$ or whatever it costs to get your camera lense replaced.
The Lens need to be replaced.
I was having the opposite problem. When we went to shut the camera down, the lens would not fully retract. So I tried the solutions suggested here for getting the lens *out* - grabbing the smallest part of the lens for a second. It worked...sort of. Now if I touch it even briefly, it will fully retract and turn off. Unfortunately, now the lens won't come out all the way and stay out. The one time I did manage to get it out, the camera would not engage. Not looking too good....

Hello...
Have any of you found a solution for this problem yet?
Does any one knows what causes this problem?
Same exact thing and I'm ticketed because this is the second camera, different issue. Last time I buy an Olympus....
I try to turn on my camera but all that happens is that the lens moves in and out and then shuts off.
I have had camera for only 5 months! The camera will not stay on...lens just keeps going in and out. No display on LCD screen =(
this has happened to me twice!
the first time it happened, the camera was a little over a year old. out of the blue it just started acting up -- it would should off out of the blue, the lens would go in and out a bunch of times and/or the screen would go black.
i contacted olympus and of course the warranty was up but i went ahead the repairs anyway. they sent it back to me along with a huge bill for a long list of repairs. just one problem -- the camera wasn't fixed! it was still doing to same thing! another (angry) call to the company resulted in them sending me a $40 battery, which made the camera work fine. wish they thought of that first before charging me an arm and a leg for all the unnecessary repairs!
however...6 months later, the camera started having the same problems. don't buy olympus! they're horrible products and from what i've found, the customer service is even worse!
i have the same problem...the last time my camera worked was when i was at the beach...but i did NOT set it down in the sand! and my pictures still uploaded to the computer fine, and it is recognized on the computer!
sam eproblem===lens just goes in and out, and screen is black. If I recharge the battery, it works for a while. Bad Olympus. Sony repairs its malfunctions for free!
