My vacuum had this exact same problem, but was out of warranty because
it was remanufactured. Thankfully, it's a very quick, five-minute fix.
Just a quick note that the DC14 has only two tabs holding the front plate on. Everything else is the same.
Thanks for this post. You saved us a bundle on repair costs!!!
But how do you reassemble the part up top where the actually red button is. I accessed the power button t hat way and I did unstick the button but I can't figure out how to get the power button back on correctly. There is a small white piece and a short, fat spring that I can't seem to put back correctly.
Yes, in response to Heather, be careful to not let that assembly (the power button and its mate) come apart. Take a picture of it (I wish I had) as it will hold together for a while but eventually falls apart if you let the buttons rise too high. It took some time to get the white piece and the fat spring back in place, and it is not obvious how the parts fit together even though I had eye-balled how it was set-up. My original problem was it was stuck in the mode where it came on automatically when you began vacuuming (seemingly the mate button to the power button was permanently depressed), but would not switch the suction to the wand when the wand was deployed. The surprise disassembly and subsequent reassembly of the buttons, along with making sure both square red switches (one is shown in the second pic b/w the thumb and index finger) fixed the problem.

Thank you so much! I just needed to get the t15 at home depot.
I was able to fix it.

My Dyson DC17 also had the same problem. The little white plastic thing that popped out, (along with two small springs) when I removed the cover, had fallen out of place and needed to be repositioned. This white thing can be seen by looking into the red power button. It was also the source of a rattle I couldn't figure out. The switches were fine. After reassembling, the vacuum"s switches work again. Glad I didn't buy a new switch before trying this. I followed the photos that had the step by step instructions for removing and reassembling, couldn't have done it without them.
Requires patience but is cost free.
