The mini USB port on the bottom of the unit will no longer make a connection with any charger (car charger, wall charger, or computer base). The green light does not come on, the unit does not charge. I believe it is a loose connection somewhere inside the TomTom, but I don't know how to take it apart or address this problem. TomTom is no help, as if a unit is out of warranty, they will not repair it (even if you pay). Insane.
The first "expert" basically said, "Take your unit apart and look at it." Not that helpful, as I am not a technological wizard. When I asked for additional information, he told me that was my bag. I need a little more assistance than that. I will be eternally grateful. Thank you!
PS. I have since figured out, thanks to another website, how to get it apart. But I still need more info on what exactly to look for inside. its a good idea to dismantle the gps. You can check the link below as it directs you on how to dismantle your gps. Though the link is for Tom-Tom GO 910, but it the same dismantling procedure. The link also provides pictures that would be very helpful.
Sounds to me like you need a new charger port. I've never hear this happen
with any GPS, but I have had it happen with a cell phone. I have also
had my cigarette lighter "port" of my car stop working. Maybe a "home
charger" would be something to try?
Also, your best bet is probably to call the company and they can tell
you what they can do for you if you ask then how their repair policy
works.
You may repair it yourself.
1. Open the back cover.
2. Look carefully if there is a short cut that can be seen.
3. Check the cables and the colors of them attached to USB port.
4. Choose your usb kind from the below picture.
5. Cut the short cut or stick it if disconnected.

Okay, first things first... How do I take the back off? The unit does have two screws on the back (although they're not normal flat or Phillips screws - they're star shaped), but otherwise it appears to be all one piece.

I have given you a general information about fixing the problem. You should find the details. It is up to you that how you will do it. This is only the critic information you will need. I want to see your feedback, after that I am going to try to help you a little more. If I have enough time then I will give you additional information of course. Thanks.

I have helped you enough. But you wanted me stay online and say what you will do step by step even you wanted me to say unscrew the first screw with your right hand while looking at the item from the left hand side and please stop now and.... What do you want me say and untill when? We must work together from the begining when I was a child and there was something....!?
I only wanted you to give my right but you did not....Only took my time. Thank you.I have helped you enough. What you basically said was "Take it apart and look at it." Even a link showing HOW to take it apart would have been helpful. Please excuse me, but when I pay for "expert" advice, I actually expect the person to take the time to answer my questions, not get an attitude and tell me he will help me when and if he has the time to do so - the whole point of PAYING for your help was that you were supposed to WORK FOR ME. That means basic information such as, "You will need a special screwdriver called a torx screwdriver to remove the case. After you remove the screws, you will then need to insert the screwdriver into the hole and use that leverage to separate the screen from the back of the case." Not to mention the fact that even after I get it open, I have to unscrew another four screws to even get a glimpse of the USB port, and there are NO wires attached to it or anywhere near it. And how did I figure all this out? By looking at a free website. Even after getting it apart, your "expert" advice was STILL useless. So, hey! Thanks for nothing!

It's possible that the head unit's USB port or the wireless phone charger is no longer functioning properly. You can try the following to troubleshoot the issue:
Disconnect the wireless phone charger and test the USB port by connecting a different device. If the other device doesn't charge, the USB port may be faulty.
If the USB port is working, try a different wireless phone charger. If it still doesn't work, the issue could be with the wireless phone charger.
Check the car's fuse box for a blown fuse related to the head unit.
If all else fails, contact Pioneer or a professional car audio installer for further assistance.
My first question is: Is this happening when connected to an external power source such as a car charger/adapter? or is this while on battery power? If on battery power, then the battery is not fully charged or is weak and can not hold a full charge. There is another possibility too and that is that the battery is not receiving voltage from the charger because the rear mini-USB port is loose (a common problem on the Nuvi 11xx, 12xx, 13xx, 14xx & 25xx models). One more issue can be the firmware version. Older firmware was unstable and caused the unit to reboot. If you are getting constant pop-up messages that the unit is about to shut down, then this is a good indication of a USB port issue (loose or broken). When this happens, the battery can not be charged and the unit will turn off. More information can be found here: SHARCNET USA Out of Warranty GPS Digital Camera Repair
If you follow these instructions which I think you know how to, it will recharge. If not the rechargeable battery needs to be replaced
To charge the battery, simply follow the steps below:
Gently pull back the rubber cover to gain access to the mini-USB port located at the bottom of the SkyCaddie. Insert the mini-USB connector of the supplied wall charger into the mini-USB slot.
Plug the wall charger into the AC wall outlet. While charging, the charging indicator in the upper left-hand side of the SkyCaddie will show red. The charging indicator will switch to green when fully charged. You may also notice the unit's screen turn on and off periodically.
The battery will charge, even with the SkyCaddie turned off. A full battery charge may take 4 hours. Once fully charged, expect 36 holes of continuous play.
Warning!Always connect the cable to the SkyCaddie first before connecting to AC power or PC USB.
My condolences. I would suggest you plug the unit in to your computer's USB port using an appropriate data cable (in case you no longer have the Garmin data cable, there are lots of devices, including cameras, that use such a cable with the large USB plug at one end and the mini-USB at the other). That would give you a handle on where the fault lies -- in the auto charger cable itself vs the nuvi's socket. If the nuvi charges from your computer, you're halfway home; if not, I suspect the cost of repairing the nuvi's USB jack could exceed the cost of a replacement unit.
With the limited information provided, a simple first step is to make sure the internal battery is either fully charged or is in a condition to accept a charge. When the internal battery's charge is allowed to below a certain level, it will no longer be capable of accepting a charge via the car charger.
The battery can be conditioned to accept a charge easily, however. This is done by connecting the GPS to the computer via USB port, NOT the car charger. Some Garmin GPS units come with a 120 volt charger that connects to the USB port of the GPS - this method is also an acceptable charge / condition method. Leave the GPS connected for 8 hours or longer (over night) and try to power up again.
connect the garmin to your computer using the usb port. It will start charging then. For some reason when the battery goes dead in this unit the only way to charge it is with computer. the car adaptor will not work once the battery gets real low.
No the device is not defective. magellan has this stupid usb interface problem preventing the unit from being charged and used at the same time, they do that so you have to use there charger. the unit will say usb connected and will not boot up like normal at all. unit will be locked up until the usb is unplugged. most usb devices charge at 5v with 500mA, and the magellan requires 5v 1A. Ipod Charger charges at the 1A with 5v but wont work
Hello,
An alternative is to use a navman P1 "hotshoe" This allows charging to be carried out through the bottom strip connector.
Available from Magicgadgetz at a cost of £20
Based on your description, you are doing it right. You said.... "when i connect it to the car charger it shows the computer sysmbol and starts charging. there is no other usb port on the device" That is correct. It takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge a low battery. There is only a mini USB port on a 260. It's used for charging and downloading updates of software or maps.
