By pbarker987 on Jun 02, 2010 " " I have an onan microquiet 4000 KY. It will not start, fault code on red light indicates (35) control card failure. Before I take it to authorized onan repair is their anything I can do myself? Can I replace board myself? I checked dc voltage at unit, I have 12.65 volts. Any advice would be great... Thanks in advance

Check the ignition circuit, and trigger coil for correct resistance on the trigger coil, and the ignition coil. The trigger coil is a small module on the engine shaft near the flywheel.
what model is it KY KV need that and Spec. If it blinks 3 times it indicates a lower service fault. While blinking hit the stop button 3 times fast, then read the code. It will blink, pause then blink again and repeat. What is that code and I can help you. IE 4 blinks pause and 3 indicates code 43
You say Guardian that is Generac???? Then you indicate Onan 4.0KY. If it is a Onan and it stops after you release the button there are a couple of things. 1 st check the brushes, and polish the rotor slip rings, check the resisitance of the rotor, the electrical harness plugs are tight. The control requires a voltage feedback while cranking to engage the PCB run circuits, if all those check out you have a bad control board.
Check the slips rings and brushes, check the stator and rotor windings for continuity and for shorts to ground. Check PCB plug connections. After that you need a new control board
That sounds like the reed valve sticking or dirty. You will need to take out the reed valve, clean and re-install. Be aware that a small amount of oil is common, also do not over fill the oil. The full mark is hot. Too much oil in the crakcase can build up pressure and keep the reed valve open.
Is your generator 4 kW or 4000 Model 5500.
If 5500 as on the picture over your question the reason may be short in the receptacles or low voltage/ rpm. If 4 kW MicroQuiet, there the reasons may be too much, that you will nead a troubleshooting manual.
bendix is actual the spring that pushes the gear back out of the ring gears engagement your issue is more likely a rusted /corrodied incline engagemnt gear a little lube will probably bring ti right back (do not us WD_40) this is not a lubricant it is an anti lubricant any light oil will do Good Luck
Remove the air cleaner and inside near the throat of the carb is two bolts holding the carb to the intake remove these. Unhook the fuel line and twist the carb to allow the linkages to remove.
I assume it is a ky spec j-l. It is a field sense fault. The controller is not sensing the field voltage. Check for broken wires or replace controller.
