Bad Lens assembly, cost more to fix than replace.
Check the Olympus store for clearance items,
Pricewatch is a good one also.
Never buy a used one online, new is ok, because dropping them is the #1 reason for the lens assembly failure.
I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpfull.
Best regards, Paul

SOURCE: Zoom lens won't retract

The motor mechanism has failed electrically or through damage- taking a knock. Either way nothing for you to do- unless you are a watch maker or good with fine tools. A repair will cost much as a new camera. Try both -a self repair and a new camera. You may get lucky and have two cameras

SOURCE: lens won't retract

Mine has done this twice, both times requiring it to be sent off for repair, both covered under warranty though luckily. Both came back saying they replaced the shutter assembly. Camera is fixing to go back out for a third time (not shutter related). I've lost all confidence in canon with this one.

SOURCE: lens error and will not retract

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

LENS ERROR RESTART CAMERA

The lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. This happens because there is dirt inside the lens (sand dust), or one part in the lens assembly is bad or went out of place.
Because of this he lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.

Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
If if does not extend tapping gently the back of the camera, and if it does not retract helping lens back in while turning camera respectively on and off.

More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

Zoom error

It sounds as though your lens is sticking while trying to extend. Check the lens to see if it binds. Also look at the retracted lens and see if the center portion is properly centered or is cocked to one side and out of alignment.
Once your camera is working properly, as you say it does at times, hold the camera with the lens pointed downward and run the zoom in and out several times to see if there is dirt caught between the lens cylinders. Sometimes that will work any debris out.

Samsun sl201 lens will not extend, then camera shuts down

If the camera's lens will not retract out, then eventually shuts down, here is what you try to do.

Hold the camera from your right hand with the lens facing down. Then tap the base of the camera to your left palm while turning the camara on; do this several times until the camera's lens retracts out.

This problem often occur when the camera was taken outdoor or in the beach. Sand or a tiny granule of dirt might got stuck in the base of the lens.

Lens will not retract. orange and green lights come on, but preview screen remains dark and lens will not retract when I trun it off.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

PowerShot SD600 will not focus

If the camera was open (lens extracted) the camera lens may be damaged. If you can retract it (power off), then maybe it's just dirty. Can you zoom in or out?
