Specifically on the Magicolor 5430DL you can print when a cartridge is empty, but this is disabled by default. To enable printing even with a toner cartridge empty.Press the Menu Button, then press the right button until the ENGINE menu appears and press the select button.Next press the right button until TONER appears and press SelectOnce in the Toner Menu the first option should be "EMPTY" if not press the right button until you see "EMPTY" and press Select. There are two options, the default is "STOP" pressing the right button once should change from STOP to CONTINUE.While the display reads "CONTINUE" press Select. You should see the message "CONTINUE is selected"You can now print even when one or more cartridges are empty. However, the lack of the cartridge's color will be noticed in any print jobs calling for that color... (Obviously)
Some laser printers (esp. HP) won't allow you to print at all if there is a toner error (even if empty cartridge).
Otherwise, try this:
Click on start -> Settings -> Printers and right click on your laser printer. Choose Properties. Then click on the Preferences button. Goto the Color Tab, and specify black and white only (not high resolution gray scale though). If your printer will allow to print in black white / gray scale, this should do the trick. Remember to undo this change when toner cart. is replaced.
My printer was having same issues even after I replaced the yellow toner!
I am disappointed to see this selected as a "best answer" as this is attempting to change a setting through PC configuration. The Magicolor 5430DL's default configuratioin will not allow ANY printing (even black and white) with an empty cartridge. This can be changed through menu settings on the printer. So I have provided instructions below for this.
