One of the supports inside the compressor may have broke and now the compressor is unbalanced. it may continue to run for quite some time before it eventually fails and it is not repairable without replacing the compressor. i would purchase a new unit if there is no warranty left on this one.

As long as it cools and you can sleep I would say no.

I have a continental elec port. air. Not sure of model. Cools great but when compressor kicks on unit make a loud whistling noise. Cleaned filter no help.

although annoying, at this time i would not mess with it, the fan motor needs oiling (zoom spout oiler ) works the best .. you can find how in my other postings.. try running the unit on a lower fan speed... some cool is better than NONE

We have a bottom freezer Kenmore refrigerator, and it makes a very loud tapping noise, almost like someone hammering. Then it will make on loud pop and quiet down for awhile.

Which is your model.
Also how about cooling temperatures are they ok.
Is the sound like the motor compressor hemmering or the fan blades hammer.

My Kenmore refrigerator is making a loud noise when running and when it shuts off it makes a loud clunking noise. Also, it is running about every 10 minutes. The refrigerator is 7 years old.

it sounds like the compressor insides are loose and you will be needing a new compressor, but just check and make sure the rubber mounting feet on the outer compressor base where its mounted to the refrigerator base are all tight and the rubber shocks are all good

My new Kenmore window unit 76081 makes loud rattle

If it does not make the noise when the fan is ruunin you may ahve abroken sping in the compressor. Make sure you Window unit is level. If not the compressor will knock on the inside. Rusty

Compressor of the Ruud A/C outside unit is making unusal loud continuous noise. I open the case, its not the fan or fan motor, loud noise is coming from the compressor, and it is also heating up a lot....

OK, you will need to replace this compressor. the internal seals have ruptured, causing the loud noises. the heat is from the metal to metal friction. the compressor can be rebuilt but, it will be more costly than just replacing it with a new compressor.

Loud Noise

Check if noise comes from compressor or from the unit . If it is from the unit is probably a fan bearing in need of replacement.
Check last pages of your manuals for service repair phone number.

Haier ESA 3185 AC won't cool; makes escalating loud vibrating noise near front panel/ filter

Have someone check the run capacitor of this unit. If the run capacitor is bad over shorted it can cause the unit to run and short cycle on a current overdraw. This makes for an electrical imbalance in the compressor motor. Next step is the compressor is faulty.

Compressor makes loud noise when it shuts off

If you know that the compressor is making the noise, I really believe you need to prepair to replace the the air conditioner. If under warranty it would be wise to contact the dealer for options.
