I had the same problem. I needed to take the clear plastic insert off but then I had to put a rubber band around the dock and camera (more on the left of the camera and dock) to hold it evenly on there since the camera was leaning on the right and wasn't charging for me. Now it charges as soon as I put it on there with the rubber band with no blinking red light anymore! Hope this helps!
I got my camera to charge by first placing the camera on the dock and before the lights flash red, use the usb cable to connect the camera directly to a pc while still on the dock. The camera will turn on and a message will say two usb connections cannot be made at the same time and to disconnect one or the other. Disconnect the usb cable while leaving the camera in the dock and the camera will continue to charge normally. Don't know why but it works.
On my camera I had to clean the contacts on base and camera with alcohol and canned air.
Next I had to add a small strip of foam to the bottom of the battery door to push the battery further into the camera. (rust colored battery holder spring missing)
Last but not least I had to completely disassemble the dock to remove the camera plug sticking out the top of the dock.
This assembly has two springs that push the plug up and into the camera.
Stretch these two springs slightly to increase the pressure and reassemble the unit.
The unit now works like new again.

I had the same problem with flashing red light with in 10 sec after 2nd green light came on. I did fix it. There is a rust brown securing tab that holds the battery in place. Mine must have a broken spring..... So, I put the battery into my camera, pushed securing tab over the battery and then wedged a toothpick tip to keep battery tab in place. No more flashing light. The problem was that the battery was not held down into place correctly. Just have to unwedge the toothpick tip to remove the battery...but not really an issue at all as I keep the battery in there all the time. Very easy fix!!!
Try using electronic cleaner. It comes in a spray can at most department stores and auto parts. Spray the docking station pins and the camera pins. The pins are electronic components which corrode or get a film on them and make a poor contact. Once cleaned your docking station should work like new. DO USE WD40 it is oil based solvent and can damage the docking station and camera.
