My friends Craftsman air compressor stopped running

My friends Craftsman air compressor stopped working yesterday. It's making a sound like the rod might be busted. Is that worth trying to fix if that is the case?

The compressor in question is basically a throw away.
My personal opinion is it's more trouble then it's worth.
Even after it's fixed you still have a throw away compressor.
However it is possible to repair it if the parts are still available.
Check out the link below for parts and diagrams for the compressor in question.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Craftsman Air Comp. 6 hp oil-less, 33 gal horz. tank - sounds really loud

Sources of noise from craftsman oil free compressors (could be Made by Campbell Hausfeld or Porter Cable) include loose fan, failing bearing/s on the piston rod and housing, failing seal ring on piston, air filter intake and loose motor mounts. With the housing cover off, check the fan blade for cracks or loose screw. Turn motor by hand till the piston is at top of stroke. Examine the cylinder for scratches close to top. If scratched, air is leaking past vinyl ring making noise and causing longer fill time. If everything looks ok, suspect noise coming from bearings. Hard to tell if bearings are failing by looking at them. I have seen many failures of the piston bearing on the crank (fairly easy to change, I use alternator bearing from auto parts ) , however, the bearing in the housing just behind the crank bearing is much harder to replacable. Good luck with your fix-it project.

Craftsman Air Comp. 6 hp oil-less, 33 gal horz. tank - sounds really loud

Some of the craftsmen compressors have pistons that are coated on the top of the dome. Once the coating wears off, they have severe loud piston slap. If you continue to run it the way it is, it will snap the connecting rod in half or break the piston and possibly the cylinder.

Craftsman 1 HP 4 Gal air compressor runs and sounds like the air pump is working but no pressure is building up

Cold weather will freeze the water the compressor normally makes and this can prevent the switch diaphragm from releasing.... also drain the tank

Plug it in, won't run

It sounds like the capacitor has failed on the motor (under the little metal cover). Go to motor shop with old one and test/replace.

Craftsman compressor won't cycle off

Hi, First, I think the cutoff pressure is 135psi and there is an overpressure valve so let it run a little longer. I don't know exactly which model you have ( some of these were oil less) but if it is running longer than you remember, be sure to check the oil if necessary, make sure you are not using a long extension as this will cause the motor to slow down and definitely check to make sure the water is drained and the drain petcock is closed all the way. Also check it without an air hose attached. Good Luck!
