Mine's an OptiPlex 760, replacing the power supply Almost works. It posts for a second, then the fan revs up and the power light turns amber. No diagnostic lights, and I have also tried replacing the RAM, and CPU. Absolutely nothing. There are no bulged caps, anything I can do without going through Tech Support? :)
The first thing to check would be the CMOS to see if there is a setting for "case intrusion" or something to that effect. Some computers have sensor that goes off the computer's side panel is opened. I believe this can be disabled in the CMOS and/or it's just a wire connected to the motherboard that can be disconnected.
It could also be an important fan, like the CPU fan, isn't spinning fast enough which may or may not lead to an over-heated CPU.
Also check to be sure all the memory sticks are firmly seated.
If it doesn't look like any of those it could always the the power supply. See if you can borrow one for a little while for testing purposes just to see if it works.
If none of those pan out I would say call Dell support and see what they say.

Okay its six long buzzes. They're not beeps, but a buzz coming from the motherboard area. None are shorter or longer than the others, just six in a row about half a second to a second each.
Thanks for your help by the way. This is my work computer and I am currently dead in the water and we have no IT here so I'm kind of on my own.
Oh an also the "1" and '3' stay lit in the front of the machine if that helps at all. All green lights no amber or red.
Ok so I mightve found the problem. One of my memory sticks looked loose, so I took it out and the computer stopped having the problem when I rebooted it, displaying "amount of system memory has changed." Now is it possible my card is damaged or scrapped? Ill try putting it back in and see it it gives the same problem.
Replaced the ram card much tighter this time, rebooted and the comp is fine. Thanks so much for tryin!!
