Oil leak on riding Craftsman LT2000 (Kohler)

Went to get the Craftsman riding lawn mower out of the scary shed. It looked like oil had leak out onto the dried grass clippings. If mice have eaten through the line, how do I check it and replace it? (It started smoking when I started the engine.)

Fortunately, the engine oil doesn't go through any rubber hoses, so they are mouse-proof. The oil probably leaked out through an engine seal. Oil on the engine surfaces would smoke when it gets hot. Check your oil level and top it up if necessary, before you run the engine again. The engine can run fine even with a slow oil leak; you just have to watch the oil level from time to time. The leak could be easy to fix - by tightening up a few bolts -- or expensive.
The gas runs through rubber hoses, though. If mice ate through that, I think you would have smelled the gasoline, and the engine wouldn't run for more than a few seconds. But if you see a severed hose, you should replace it. Take it off and bring it to a mower shop or auto supply shop, and buy something the same diameter. Inexpensive.
Hope this helped! If so, please rate my answer, thanks!

Kohler engine oil leak

Could have blown a seal however before checking for that I would check the drain plug and filter seating if you changed the filter. Make sure the drain plug is not cross threaded. You can run a little low but should never over fill. Hope this will help. Most of the time if over filled you will get some smoke as well.

Is it ok to use Mobil 1 5W30 in this and also, what oil filter should I use?

Its little light. 10w30 would be better. The oil filter should have no. on it.

Changing the oil filter on a lawn tractor

If it is a screw on type oil filter, apply a film of oil on seal, then screw on. If you want to, go ahead and pour some oil in the filter, in my opinion the oil will circulate faster if there is some oil already in the filter.

My craftsman 15.5HP kohler riding mower turns over

Try cleaning or better yet, replacing the spark plug. Depending on age and how your tractor was maintained, there are other possible causes.
  • Gummed up fuel system
  • dirty fuel filter
  • defective or misaligned armature/magneto (part that causes your plug to spark, igniting the air/fuel mixture, thus starting the engine)
  • throttle linkage/cable problems
  • low oil level. Some Kohler engines use a low oil shut down sensor which won't allow the engine to run or start to avoid internal damage.
  • Mechanical engine problems
I hope you find this solution helpful. Please rate it thanks for using Fixya!

What weight oil should I use for 16 horsepower craftsman engine?

It all depends on the engine you have...all engines except for KOHLER can use straight 30 and Kohler uses only 10W30.
