My oven will not preheat and the broiler does not

My oven will not preheat. It just kept running without reaching desired temperature. I turned it off and tried the broiler and there was no flame with a slight smell of gas. Turned that off. It now doesn't appear to start to heat up at all when I turn the oven on. Is there something I can check myself with a pilot perhaps?

The problem is usually the igniter not reaching the correct amp draw .When the igniter does not reach the correct amp draw it may allow the gas valve to partially open or not open at all. The igniters are inexpensive and easy to replace. There is a video at http://appliancehelponline.com/gasoventroubleshootvideo.html this will walk you thru the correct procedure for performing this test. It may be a different model but the testing will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. Not all models are available. All parts come with installation instructions.

thanks for the experienced techs words. I thought my maytag range problem was a gas valve. but with this video i'm going to check the igniter current.

How to preheat oven

Hello, Cristina -

Since you have not stated the make and model of your oven, all I can advise is for you to turn your oven on and set it to the desired temperature and wait for 10 - 15 minutes until the oven comes up to the full heat temperature.

You can read the instructions here, if you wish:

Best wishes.

I have an old Modern Maid double oven. DK 0757. Broiler comes on everytime I try to heat for baking. Any suggestions

It was common for the broil element to come on during the preheat time on older oven controls. When the oven reaches temperature the broil should shut off. If this just started then the points in the broil switch section are welded together and the oven thermostat will need replacing

Should my broiler turn on when I am preheating my oven this does not seem right to me and my oven caught on fire last night

Hi,
Yes the broiler will often turn on to help preheat the oven.
If it caught fire, it is not because of that, but because you have too much run over food in the oven. That is what caught fire. You need to clean it an NOT with the self clean!!

GE Model JKP12G0P2BG Wall Oven Bake Element Not Working Properly

The temperature sensor is bad. The broil element will work even if the temp sensor is bad but the bake element will not. If you measure the resistance across the contacts on the sensor, it should be around 20 ohms, if it is much higher (1000+), then it is bad and should be replaced. It is just as easy to replace as the elements and looks like a small pencil sized rod in the inside top of the oven. Let me know how this works out for you.

Frigidaire single oven broiling

hi,
The pan and it's grid is all you need, The broiler pan and it grid allow dripping grease to drain and be kept away from the high heat of the broiler. DO NOT use the pan without its grid. DO NOT cover the grid with foil. Some helpful info.. Preheating is suggested when searing rare steaks. Broil on side until the food is browned; turn and cook on the second side. Broiling times vary, so watch the food closely. Time not only depends on the distance from element, but on the thickness and aging of meat, fat content and doneness preferred. The first side usually requires a few minutes longer than second. BE SURE THE DOOR IS OPEN AN INCH OR TWO WHILE BROILING
