My Garmin nuvi 255W unit won't charge at all with the car charger. At first, it would charge when plugged in only if I put a little sideways pressure on the mini-usb connection with the car charger, but now that won't even work. I haven't checked yet to see if it will charge with a cord besides the car charger.

SOURCE: System Software Missing on Garmin Nuvi 255W

Hi,
Take a look at this site, http://www.garmin.be/missing.html Download and unzip the software, plug your garmin in the USB and start the updater.exe program. It gets you started again. Later on you can use the Webupdater to get possible newer software..
It worked for me and my Zumo550

SOURCE: Open the case of a Garmin nuvi 255w

i am wondering why you want to open it.

There are some small parts that will fall out unless you are very careful and even more difficult to put back when you try and close it up
. Other than to change the battery there are no fuses or user repairable parts inside.

  1. Use the provided vehicle power cable that came with your GPS unit. The unit will charge while powered on and using the device as well as when the GPS unit is powered off and plugged into a running vehicle. About 3 hrs for a full charge. If the unit will not charge in the vehicle, check the fuse in the power cable for the unit and the power outlet in the vehicle.
  2. Use an AC power adaptor. Some units come with this power cable to plug the GPS unit into a wall outlet allowing the GPS unit to take a charge. For units that do not come with this cable, one can be purchased from Garmin's online store.
  3. For most units, the final way of charging the battery is to plug the GPS into a powered on computer with a USB cable2. This method of charging will be a trickle charge and it may take longer (like a full day) than the other two options, however it will still charge the battery. A USB cable is provided with a few GPS models. For those that don't come with this cable, one can either be ordered from the online store or you can use a standard USB to mini-USB cable that fits the unit and plugs into your computer.
1 - Please note that temperature can play an effect on the charging of a device. If the battery registers a temperature of 0°C and below or 45°C and above (32°F and 113°F respectively) then it will not charge. When connected to external power it will only be operating off of external power.
2 - The Quest® and Quest® 2 will not charge using a USB cable.

I cannot get my Garmin nuvi 255w to turn on even when plugged into it's power source - the car charger or the indoor plug in charger. There is no display, just a black screen.

Try a master reset. Hold the power switch to the left and hold for 10 seconds and release. You may also have a bad USB charging port. A common problem with units with USB only connectors.

Garmin Nuvi 255w will not let me use it when being charged. Only get charge screen

Sometimes this happens because the mini USB plug of the charger is not fully pushed into the back of the satnav. It feels like it is but it's not. Pushing it in further may solve the problem.

You need a genuine Garmin car charger to both charge and see directions at the same time. If it is a non - Garmin lead you can't charge and use at the same time. the Garmin at the same time. Otherwise the unit just goes into sleep/pc mode. It took a long time to get to the bottom of this, so I thought I'd pass the information on...

Hi sudavis70,

yes, you should be able to use your 255w while driving...if its going to the garmin screen ( or the screen with the computer icon) when plugged in to the car charger, then the car charger is probably either bad or not compatible with your unit..if its the original charger, i would buy another one thats made for a garmin.

the only time you shouldn't be able to use your 255w, is when its hooked to your computer.

i fix these and many other gps daily so when considering my advice , please understand i do not google my solutions.

The unit should still operate and turn on even with a dead battery when connected to an external power source such as the DC car charger, AC wall charger or USB cable (connected to a PC).

Please try the reset procedure listed here:

No, it may take a little longer if you are charging through the USB port. I normally have mine plugged in while driving, it charges and is in use too. To use GPS with USB. First turn the GPS on (without USB plugged in). Press Battery symbol on screen for about 10 seconds, a test screen will come on. Plug in the USB (bottom of screen shows USB connected). Tap EXIT to return to maps. You can now use it while USB is charging Make sure you turn GPS off before removing the USB cable
