This could be the actual CD/DVD/DVDDL/RAY disc that you are using, try using an app called imgburn to see the medias fastest speeds.

Compatibility wth DVD and burning speed 4x instead of 8x

The write speed of your machine is 4x. It will only write at 4x no matter how fast your DVD blank is. When your write at a slower speed, you get a better quality DVD picture.

Low burn speed

I had the same problem before upgrading my RAM. Seems video burning software like nero are RAM hogs; if you do not have a large amount of RAM then it slowers the burning speed down to a crawl.[ BTW I didn't get maximum burning speeds using nero on a Windows Vista computer until I upgraded to 2 GB RAM] Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer.

Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-111d instruction manual

The manual likely is at the Pioneer website. But why do you need it? These drives stick in your computer pretty easily, and only function if you have a good DVD burning program installed. Did it come with an installation CD? Your burning program may be on that. If you run into trouble, just call Pioneer--they owe it to you.

Pioneer DVR-111d dvd rw

Is this a new drive? If so, make sure that the media is put "label side up". You have a bad drive if this is not the case...accordianman

Dvd compatibility issues...

You should try updating the firmware in the burner. http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=16989 http://wwwbsc.pioneer.co.jp/product-e/ibs/device_e/dev00001r_e.html scroll down a page or 2 and you will see the firmware upgrade for your model. Good Luck, Tim
