Re: High-pitched alarm-like sound coming from GE frig -...
Very common problem is the evap fan located in the freezer section is the cause. Sorry but this is controlled by the main board on the back and only way to fix the problem is with a new board. Sorry about the news but it is the problem.

the squirrel cage fan motor is squealing, can be lubricated with a graphite or some sort, lubricating with any type of oil might cause a dirt build up on the shaft causing later problems
First check the simple: may just be dust and pet fur clogging up the airway making it hard for the condenser fan to draw ... or condenser fan bearing is wearing out.
If the sound is from the compressor, the unit is likely under warranty...generally 5 years. If the unit is frozen up and the sound is from a fan that is hitting ice, defrost the unit completely. Other fans in the unit could also be squealing. You'll have to be a detective.
you should not hear it from that far away. It sounds like it may be compressor related. The only thing you could check to make sure is remove the lower rear cover and check the condensor fan and listen to the compressor to see if thats where the noise is cmming from. Check the fan in the freezer too.
