The system doesn't recognize memory card in slot. If I hold it in REAL firmly we may be able to save a game on occasion Playstation 2 does not recognise any memory cards in either slot, I have tried several to no avail - it just says no memory card inserted.

Have you tried cleaning the open connections?
There could simply just be dust intefering with the connection.

Assuming you've got the right cards for your system, there are two tests you need to perform:
1. Borrow a memory card from a friend and try saving files to it and
then reading them. If this does not work, your PS2 is probably broken
and you'll need to get it fixed.
2. If other memory cards work in your system, go over to a friend's
house and test your memory card in their system. If this does not work,
you know that your memory card is busted and needs to be replaced.
