You have 2 Shift keys on the keyboard. If the other shift key is working then the shift key that is not working is defective. You should consider replacing the keyboard on your laptop. There is no setting on Windows that can disable the shift key.

**Note : If both Shift keys are not working, Try to check if sticky keys feature on windows is on. Sticky keys should be disabled. To disable sticky keys, Click on start and Go into control panel > AccessibilityOptions, and under keyboard there is sticky keys. Remove the tick and click apply and OK.

**If "Use Sticky Keys" is unchecked, that means sticky keys is disabled.

Before buying a new keyboard, try borrowing one from a friend to see if
    the keys work.

If you are using Microsoft Windows and a full
size keyboard with a separate numerical keypad, you can also input
characters using an 'ALT code'. For example, hold down the ALT key and
type 43 on the numerical keypad to insert a plus sign '+'.""""""""""""" i
get this when i press shift keys or caps lock to use the at symbol

@ key is not working when i press the shift key and @ its only giving me #2

Then your shift key may be faulty, try using the shift key on both sides of the keyboard to do this. If it still doesn't work then it means that your shift keys are fine its just the secondary functing of the "2" key that is faulty.

SHIFT KEYS NOT WORKING PROPERLY

Please try to deactivate the Fn (function) key. That will help you get rid of your problem. Press Fn key + Numlock key once and try again. You can also try pressing the Fn key once and type letters in any word processor program with the key combination everytime you press the Fn key once. E.g. open the notepad, press Fn once and after that press ) with Shift.

If you have problem, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

I HAVE A NEW ACER 5517 AND CAN'T GET THE @ KEY TO WORK???

First, does the #2 key work? I assume thats the same key as your at button.
If it does, if you hold the shift key and press 3, do you get the pound sign?

if the 2 key does not work, then the problem is with your #2 button. if the # key does not work, then the problem is with your shift key.

Try the right shift key, blow air into those keys, if it still does not work, you will need to replace the keyboard.

it will be covered under warranty.

My shift key wont work at all

Holding down both shift keys at the same time wont work. Chances are you have a dead key. use the other shift key instead. if a program is mapped to use specifically that shift key, remap it to the opposite one.

If you are using a desktop, replace the keyboard; if it is a laptop replace it if you can yourself, otherwise, call a computer technician.

I cant get my 'at' key to work.

Try using the other shift key. If that works, then you most likely have a dirty or defective keyboard.
Does the number 2 work? Does your shift key product uppercase letters (does it work with other keys?)
If you are having problems with a flaky keyboard, it's pretty inexpensive to replace it and reduce your stress.

Shift Keys not working properly on ACER notebook

The 8042 keyboard controller has been integrated into one chip with other I/O functions so I doubt you can replace it as a single IC and I'm afraid that is what has failed. It is an extremely rare failure but I guess it has to happen some time. The keyboard is kind of a polled matrix so it only takes the failure of a single line to bollix things up.
I think what you are talking about here is a motherboard exchange or repair.

Shift key wont work!!!!!

It sounds like you have a FilterKeys options checked that is disabling your Shift keys.

Try going to Start -> Control Panel -> Accessibility Options
Uncheck all boxes in the Keyboard tab (StickKeys, FilterKeys and ToggleKeys) and click Apply or OK.

Try your Shift keys now.
